Montserrat is a really great country to start with if you wish to collect the reign. The stamps follow the usual pattern of most other colonies, and are straight forward and simple. Like most colonies, there were two definitive series.

The first was the monochrome set issued 2 August 1938. The first printing (the 1938 printing) was perforated 13 x 13 1/4. It is rather difficult to find used. There were not any colour nor shade varieties.

The second printing of the series (1942-1945) was line perforated 14.

The different printings between 1942-1945) yielded some colour varieties and a few flaws.

Here is the second printing to the 1/-...

The second definitive series, was issued 17 September 1951. Here's the 3-cent stamp from the series...

Montserrat is a small colony, so you could probably have an interesting postmark collection from there, as well.

Enjoy!

David

Thanks for sharing. Collecting KGVI helps narrow the collection and remove the high dollar 19th century stamps while still allowing the "sun to never set" on the empire highlighted in the collection. Lot's of interesting locations can be explored. Such a focus would allow me to not only be more complete but also spend time describing the scenes within the stamps...

I have an album series and collection of British Empire through 1970 or independence which is so broad it has too much white space. I have thought of keeping it but apply strong focus on the reign of QEII which showcase a lot of transition from colony to independent state. The stamps start with issues very similar to KGVI but then become more modern and topical. I usually stop at 1970 (except for a few like HK and Singapore) to limit the collection (many island went crazy with Princess Diana and other topicals). In the 1970's my sister started a QEII coronation album which I have since obtained and completed. The stamps mostly look the same but it was a good introduction to the empire.

I have friends that fled Monserrat after the volcano.

Thanks David for this great series of King George the VI,I didn't realise that your collection was so extensive until I started to read your posts and in doing so extend to you my appreciation for the amount of time and effort you spent accumulating this eye opening collection thanks again.

Yes David, your series has been very interesting. Keep up the presentations. The KGVI stamps as well as the early QEII issues of the British commonwealth are very nice and interesting stamps.

Does anyone besides me find that the stamps from the various colonies and commonwealth countries which show scenes from around the places capture the flavor of the countries far better than slick photos of those places?
