Some of you may recall the thread on the 1987 reproductions of Israel's 1973 set of Chagall's Stained Glass Windows representing the Twelve Tribes of Israel (Scott 509-20). There was a lingering question as to how many versions of reproductions there were. For those of you who don't know the series, here is Scott 509, the Tribe of Levi:

BREAKING NEWS

I have managed to track down and purchase seven distinct types of reproductions. I don't have them all in my possession yet. When I do, I'll post all the pictures. Until then . . .

TYPE 1 - The booklet from the original discussion which has two fold out pages with tete-beche sections of three perforated stamps on each.
TYPE 2 - The same type of booklet except the stamps are imperforate.
TYPE 3 - A set of three sheets of four imperforate stamps produced in a "Limited Edition or 750."
TYPE 4 - A similar or identical set of sheets except that they were produced in a "Limited Edition of 1000." (Could there be a little hanky panky here? I won't know until I get them in hand and can compare the printings.)
TYPE 5 - A TYPE 4 with each sheet overprinted with a gold embossed exhibition seal - supposedly only some of the TYPE 4 1000 were overprinted in this manner.
TYPE 6 - Four sheets of three imperforate stamps similar or identical to TYPE 2 booklet pages produced in a "Limited Edition of 1000."
TYPE 7 - Twelve sheets of "proofs" with color variations of one issue on each sheet produced in a "Limited Edition of 1000." These puzzle me a bit so we'll see what you think.

There is more research and auction hunting to do, but this has been fun so far!

I bet these are going to make a lovely set.

I know I'm off-topic of your thread, but the only Chagall stamps I've actually seen are the U.N. Singles and Souvenir Sheets.

I look forward to seeing more of your acquisitions...

Israel also has a 1969 issue "King David by Marc Chagall" (Scott 399)

It'll be interesting to see what you finally tally up after a month or so of hunting...

By saying "reproductions", just what do you mean? Who reproduced them, the Israeli postal authorities? Are, were, they legal for postal use? I had understood that "reproduction" was a term used for copies made for collecting purposes only. So now I'm wondering if I need to be re-educated?

No, you don't need to be re-educated !
Laswabbie showed an actual stamp and gave the Scott number, the reproductions were made for collectors in 1987, not valid for postal use, but most likely with permission from the Postal Authorities.

Reproductions might be a good topic for a new thread. There are some good ones around, and a number of them with an interesting story to go with them.
I am sure very many have seen mail use to, albeit illegal.

Londonbus1....Off to look for repros.

A bump here to mention that the window stamps (which are beautiful in person, by the way...thanks swabbie!) must have been sticking in the back of my mind, because I just saw them again while flipping through September, 2009's issue of American Philatelist, on page 835. I hadn't paid much attention to them the first time through.

For what its worth.
