In this album of first day covers I inherited, most looked fairly normal, some used, some unused. However, this one caught my eye as being a little odd.

It seems to be issued on the Australian military base in Malaysia. Are there many instances of this occurring at other military bases, or with other countries? Is this worth keeping amongst my other first day issues? The envelope is completely unused, however, does have the red cross going along the front and back.

"This" means what, exactly? If you mean handstamped or printed cachets for events on military bases, there are many and covers can even have special cancellations.

There is nothing "issued" about the above. The cachet is probably legit but with zero on the postage meter, this did not go anywhere much less via registered airmail. It is not a first day anything but more like a cacheted event envelope that as you say never got used. As a wild guess, it could possibly be a sample to show non-postal people how to prepare genuine covers but it also looks like something made up just to be a free souvenir for someone.

Agree with HB,
I would certainly keep it, it may have a hidden meaning.
At first glance, it is a Meter cancellation, (Favour Cancel)
It may be, a first usage of that meter machine, or maybe the last, I am not sure when Malaysian took over Butterworth.

Australian Meter specialists may be interested.

The red cross would have meant a Registered cover, but there is no Registered Number in the box (favour cancel)

Thanks folks :)

I'll be taking it out of my first day cover book and putting it with my various cinderella types.
