May be a dumb question Don, but in your 'inkjet' and Robert's 'half-tone' pics above the dots are somewhat random. On my 'stamp' they are very uniform in placement, mainly just different intensity. Does this matter? What reproduction media would accomplish the uniformity?

Have a look at the points under high magnification, are those only black? If yes, it's only printed with black color, and the dots should imitate the slightly darker color of the paper and that is why they are quite uniform. Maybe you see more than black under magnification, and maybe even between the dots, then it's printed with color.

By the way, could you show the complete image?
And: if there a cancel on it that also has been printed?

The image I posted was full color and the ink jet that produced had a different linearization (or profile). Ink jet linearization is often a configurable parameter to accommodate different paper types. For example a hard, coated paper does not absorb the water-based inkjet ink well while another softer, uncoated paper will absorb the ink. So inkjet printer configurations often support changing the linearization of a sprayed dot pattern to produce the best looking output.

Without the stamp in hand what I have posted is speculation, examining the stamp under high magnification often reveals clues to its printing method. But given the image you posted, it seems virtually impossible for this to be a #17.

This looks like it was cut out of a catalog and may or may not be glued to some backing. The original stamp was engraved.

Caper123

I a no American stamp expert..After doing some thinking, thought it might have been 1 of 3 ideas for its existence.

1 - Like Germania said..Cut from catalouge and glued to a piece of paper, but you would see that with the stamp in hand.

2 - Thought it was part of a 50th or 75th anniversary of a George Washington stamp..But could not find one.

3 - Here is what I think it might be (might be remember)..If the stamp in hand looks like what you think a normal stamp looks like...It may be a 2007 "personalized postage" issue with the George Washington stamp done for personalized use and some one cut only the inner part of the stamp off for fun, OR to try and pass it off as an 1851-1857 original.

Here is the front of Caper123's stamp.
