Hi! I'm planning on selling a small collection of stamps I've recently inherited. But there are a few things I had questions about before I add them to a collection for sale for a pretty low cost (I really just rather find someone who would enjoy them as much as the original owner, however I could definitely used the money if it had a significantly higher value). So if anyone can offer any help, I'd greatly appreciate it! Thank you in advance! So I basically just want to know if 2 specific items I have are considered errors, and if so, are they ones worth selling the items independently (vs in a lot). As well as just a general question about stamp ink errors if any.
1) I have what I believe to be a 1938 George Washington one cent US postage stamp that has been used and canceled, but still in good shape. Now the ones I've found when researching all had 4 sided perf. Mine on the other hand has only sides perf- not the top and bottom. Is this an error? Or are some just like that?
2) I also have a 1965 FDC from the Republic of Iraq of the Arab Federation of Insurance. This envelope has of course the stamps on it (cancelled) but it also has the preprinted design/ emblem for the Arab fed of insurance. But the emblem actually says "Arab FEDFRATION " clear as day. It looks as though the ink just never took for the bottom line of that E. It doesn't look worn/rubbed off- just not there. So would this be considered a significant error? And if so where would I find how to price it as I haven't been able to find any such errors in researching?
3) and just in general, if Stamps have spots if them in which ink was missed or didn't transfer correctly, like the light spot on the side of the Paul revere stamp, is that considered an error? And is it one that is significant or common? Thank you!!
First stamp you show is a coil stamp, hence the two imperforated sides. The Paul Revere stamp could be damaged in that spot or maybe under-inked. Damaged is most likely - it is used stamp The Arab stamp may be an error - I am not familiar with these
Thank you...and I shall post away! But just for fun (I kinda figured FDC wouldn't be that big of a deal considering the error is not in the stamp or cancel or anything like that...it's just in the pre-printed emblem on the envelope. But nonetheless, it's kinda funny! #128518;
Ok well maybe you guys could help me out with a starting bid price for the lot I have because I really don't have a clue! In short heres what I have:
—Album of 300 Mint, never used or hinged, vintage (1959-1979) Malta Commemorative stamps w series and issue date labeled pages & protective sleeves. Each pages has each of the different denominations for that series (if applicable), with some also having sheets of 3x same denomination (like if they form a pix together), as well as a miniature sheet for some that contain all the denominations for that series together and intact in an illustrated little page (again when applicable). Includes multiple definitive sets, overprints.
—48 cancelled vintage UK/ West Germany stamps grouped into 9 laminated cards (so I assume they are hinged?). Multiple different denominations/colors/pictures, etc.
—72 cancelled vintage republic of Iraq stamps covering the complete backsides of 3 different post cards and laminated over. 2 have all On-State Service stamps of multiple denominations/colors/pictures and the 3rd being all commemorative stamps. 24x per card
—26 vintage US post marked stamps. 7 1930s historical people/landmark stamps in laminated card. Mystic stamp co sets: US1-1 1974 commemorative stamps, US1-2 1960-61 American Credo Series, 1995 US1-3 fall garden flowers, US1-4 1985-91 airmail
—35+ vintage (1950s & 60s) cancelled same day First Day Issues or Covers (not sure if they're the same) from Republic of Iraq & Indian Posts & Telegraphs of various different themes w multiple stamps and post marks on most
Ok thanks...and unfortunately no I don't. But honestly I may just keep them! I mean my kids have no interest considering they're teen girls...but I didn't think I did really either and tell you the truth- it's far more interesting than it seems! Every little stamp has given a little piece of our past and our history in the world. Like I said, something that many seem to want to forget these days. Thank you for all your responses as I greatly appreciate them & all the knowledge youve all given me!
Nice to hear you've discovered a little of the wonder of these stamps along the way! People always assume stamp collecting is boring and only for old men (I used to be one of those nay-sayers), but truthfully it's very interesting and fun! Glad I saw the error of my ways and am now a happy collector myself :)
