Hello.

I have a big Greece Hermes (Mercury) project I am starting.

All of these are unidentified.

Is this a #1?

Thank you. Any help would be great!

If starting a specialized collection the best advise is to get literature on the subject. Start with a specialized Greek catalog,

Peter

Doubtful, shading lines look much too coarse for a Paris printing.

A big exciting undertaking. Research and literature specialized. Reference copies.

Thank you to everyone that responded. It is a good thing I am currently learning German because every specialized Greece catalog is in German.

As far as the Greece #1 goes, I am assuming it is such because of the, "very faint neck detail"

Thanks again for your help and suggestions.

This looks to be on cream paper and has none of the characteristics of the first issue. Some of the 1L values have been examined in other posts on SCF including one that gives at least reference you should obtain. You need to examine the stamps you have as a group rather than throwing them out one by one here and you need to study and differentiate the papers.

Consider digging into journals.
You can buy +90 years of the "Philotelia" journal here:

This is truly an area for the specialist.

To me these Hermes heads are some of the more confusing stamps in philately. What is the go-to reference material for these?

I would put this as a Cleaned plates printing of 1867-69; deep red Brown:(Hellas 23a) Scott 23a.

I believe the Hellas catalog is the goto reference for Greece.

I'm not sure if he/she is still around, but the member Vasia on here was tremendously knowledgeable and helpful in identifying mine. I think the thread is still up but my photobucket pics are long gone. I do still have them marked in my book though so feel free to contact me and I'll send a photo of the page at some point which you can compare to my thread on them.

That's the link to my thread eons ago. Good luck on your project!!
