I see several folks i. Similar situations, returning to active collecting after some 20 to 40 years inactivity.
In my case, my mother had started collecting US issues back in the 1960s in middle age for some reason, perhaps because our next door neighbor collected (hers was a marvelous US collection). But I caught the bug as a tween and teenager and took over her collection. Got my father to take me to an Interpex in New York in 1970 or thereabouts. My best friend growing up also collected and we enjoyed comparing some of our little prizes. I have to confess I always coveted his mint c18 he obtained from an uncle who workd in the Los Angeles post office. But, I went off to college, started working, and stopped collecting.
Now in my 60s as I considered disposing of the accumulation (dostadning I suppose cause kids are not interested) I thought I might fill in some lacunae. So I now have my own example of C18.
So 1) I'm collecting US 1847 to ca1975. I do not care for the self adhesives and have to figure out a sensible end point. I also need to figure out whether to rehouse in a Scott numbered album. I am in old Minkus albums in which there are hundreds of nice filled Black Showgard mounts, but the Minkus numbering makes for constant work... 2) I have a small collection of old Bosnia Herzigovina I picked up in a box lot of books at an estate auction Years ago that I might dust off. 3) a small collection of pre-war Cameroon that might be fun to expand and infill. An interesting a turbulent history there.
