This topic has been floating around for a week or two now with several solutions and suggestions. I wanted to add one more post for anyone interested.

I was looking around at Subway this morning; they have some older issues of Scott 1990s - early 2000s listed on their closeout page.

One that caught my eye was 1999 US Specialized for $3; other cats and years go up to about $20. For folks like me who don't collect the newer stuff, they might be a good deal.

PS. Unfortunately, I don't own Subway Stamps, so I seek no personal gain here -- just passing along info

Wow, phil. That's quick isn't it. I thought the 11s would come about October/November.

I love how the Editors tell me I MUST get the latest catalog because of the "11,000 new values." I find I use y Scott for identifying and learning about the stamp, but not usually for finding the catalog value. After all, when's the last time you saw a stamp on ebay that the seller didn't list the latest catalog value

I am using a 1994 set of Scott catalogs. Eventhough the prices are outdated they show what is common and relativley more expensive. For the few countries I collect past 1970 I check out the 2009 catalog from the library to help with identification.

I am wanting to buy a new set of catalogs so I have the color versions and get the benefit of getting into 2000s. The library sells the old ones so I may join the friends of the library and see if I can find some 3 year old catalogs when they start migrating them out. I also check at book stores, shows etc. I'm in no hurry and don't want to pay a lot....when you need all the volumes it adds up.

Quanah, I recently updated my U.S. Scott specialized 13 years...from 1995 to 2008...the 2008 with colors is great..but its amazing how in some areas prices did not change ALL that much..the 95 would still be a great reference book for someone..as you say he can always check up on the price increases if he has to !!

HI

Just out of curiosity, how many members buy foreign (to their country) catalogues?

I have bought some in the past for Germany, Italy, Britain and others to name a few.

My main reaon for this is becasue I want to go beyond the scope of the Scotts Catalogues which can be lacking in a lot of areas. Foreign catalogues will also list varieties etc that are not listed in the Scotts Catalogues.

Even for Canadian stamps, Scotts is lacking and I do all my trading / buying / selling through the Canadian "Unitrade Catalogue" for the same reasons. Plus, that catalogue also lists different conditions (VG, F VF etc) for mint and used and lists premiums for MNH etc.
