What Are These Perforations Camels?

Hello,

Can you please tell me what the space is called under the Washington three cent stamp? The extra gap between the image and the perforations at the bottom?

Also, could you please tell me if the one cent stamp is garbage or worth keeping? I don't know if edges like that are worth anything. I have some with the holes still with paper in them. Junk?

I think the first is what's known as a "wing margin" (here, at least) - a wider area between the design and the perforation at a sheet-edge. The second stamp has what's known as a "perfin" - the design perforated by an organisation to discourage theft of stamps by employees. Some people have specialised collections of these. So not garbage.

Someone smarter than I could give the technical term for the extra space which I'd call an "oops". It looks like more space than just "off center" so perhaps it was perforated with a setting for a different stamp.

The 1cent with holes is a perfin, if you look you can see it spells out "HS & Co". Someone on here probably knows what the company is as some folks collect them. Some say they destroy the stamp but I personally like them, I think they tell an interesting story. They were used by large companies to prevent employees from stealing stamps and using them on non-company letters.

poor quality control is the reason for the large gap between the design and the stamp in your first image. the clipped perforations make it a space filler and of no value. the other item has what are called perforated initials which were applied as a theft deterrent by the company which owned them to safeguard their postage. many variety's exist and have been identified and cataloged. check out the stampsmarter .com website for more info.

Wow thank you everyone! I have so many stamps like this and so many Franklin stamps. They were stacks of them with string tied around. I undid the strings and there were so many different types of each one, my brain hurts! Then there were these little almost like brown paperish shiny thin envelops with even more in them and I don't know what makes them more or less special than the other ones? I need help!! The HS/Co perfin is not a match for the cover above ... note the vertical positioning of the "o".

It is instead H184, in the "Catalog of United States Perfins", identified to Halsey Stuart & Co of New York City. Then why a Detroit cancel? Most likely soaked from a postcard sent to future business appointments by a traveling sales representative of the company while in the field.
