Hello everyone.

I just bought this letter for my "stuff I like collection".

It is from Frankfurt to Brescia(Italy)and the stamps are the 3 and 7 Kreuzer stamp small schield. posted 7th of May 1872

I know that German foreign postal rates in 1872 is a not an easy subject matter.

But it would be nice if someone could confirm to me that he postal rate of 10 Kreuzer is correct/possible.

Kind regards,

Johan.

In the meanwhile I did find another letter posted to Italy(Milan) in 1872 also with the 7 + 3 Kreuzer stamps.

I have also seen two covers to New York with the 7 + 3 kreuzer postage.

I will keep searching for more information.

Hello Hornet785

I looked at the postal rates of the Southern part

Assuming inland postal rates are also postal rates for abroad(outside Germany).

There is a postal rate for 10 kreuzer to the USA.(<1 loth via England)
1 loth is 16.67 grams

I cannot find a postal rate that is 10 kreuzer to Italy.

I will take a look at he the postal rates of the northern psrt, but they look even more unlikely.

Johan.

Hi Johan,

This is a really nice area of collection. By the way awesome cover!

I'll give you some clues (I go by heart because I'm away from home and there are a lot of data)

First conversion, these stamps are color coded:

Green 1 Kreuzer = 1/3 Groschen

red, yellow orange 2 Kreuzer = 1/2 Groschen (they made a change for the 1/2 Groschen from red to yellow orange same with the 2 Kreuzer under small shield because was looking too much the same as the next values)

Red 3 Kreuzer = 1 Groschen

Blue 7 Kreuzer = 2 Groschen (by heart, 6 Kreuzer for certain rates = 2 Groschen)

Tomorrow I'll be home

Regards

Hornet

Hi Johan,

For the foreign rates, it is all based on route taken and destination.

Italy was a 50/50 deal. From 01-04-1869 3 groschen (10 Kreuzer) is good

So 1.5 Groschen each (Reich and Italy)

Here an example from my collection (NDP) same rate to Italy.

Best regards

Thank you for your help Hornet.

Those early 1870's make a very interesting couple of years to collect.

Very nice NDP cover, I really like those horseshoe postmarks.

Kind regards,

Johan.
