NWPI:
it may be worth mentioning that the December 2004 edition
of Gibbons Stamp Monthly has a 4 page editorial on the forged NWPI opts
by Mr. Robert Benoit.
Don't worry, the forgeroies are valuable too :)

The left may be more heavily inked. For correct appraisal King,
we need deeper resolution scans. I am not the expert either :)
KG5 is your man, but he is away at the moment it seems.

cjd,

Could your cancel with the -22- on bottom be from a TPO (Travelling Post Office) of some sort? Railway? Seapost? It struck me that it looks like a Great Britain cancel that had numbers in the bottom of the cancel.

Link to TPO society's page that has GB cancels with similar placement of numbers:

Some News has come in...and it's surprising
(I said it looked like a "Y")

It's a philatelic cancel.

NEW GUINEA Used 2d Red NWPI KGV
Postmarked with Sydney/22 cds

If that is correct, it is the first one I have seen
(But that doesn't mean a great deal )

Well, that wouldn't have been my first choice for answers to receive, but beggars can't be choosers, as they say.

Thanks for the help. I'll consider it closed, and leave hanging the question of "why?"

A fuller explanation of the 1d red dieII *that is not a die* but a constant printing flaw. It is very interesting because there is nothing else like it.

The printing wheel for columns 2 & 3, in a cast for 10 stamps per wheel, had this flaw [die II] in varying shapes & angles before the spur broke off. The spur lasted for 2 complete printing wheels then broke away from the mold.

There was an extremely small printing of dieII 1d greens before it was corrected. Stamp positioning is the only way to identify this flaw in the 1d greens.

My prize collection of progressive dieIIs. Even in the condition they're in they are very expensive stamps because of shade & perf "OS". Magnified examples below:

Merged flaw. Bottom stamp 2nd column. One only in this state.

Intermediate flaw. Second stamp from bottom on column 2. One only in this state.

10 recumbent flaws at varying degrees of angle spread over columns 2 & 3.

8 erect flaws at varying degrees of angle, third column only.

King Conn: I have had a look for a thin one penny but cannot see one that matches yours. The stamp looks like a thick print over the whole stamp. I agree with Rod. Nice example image of a thick ink variety. Thanks, KGV.

Can anybody explain why these two stamps are different lengths? Thank you. KGV.

I can only think because they are line perfed KG5
If they are comb perfed you have a real query
You do know of the "wet prints" where the stamp shrunk
thereby giving differing design sizes?
I presume you are condiering the perfed sizes of both examples.

Some good info to think about. Thanks Rod!
The first stamp has shrunk a little compared to the normal and the perf line-up is within reason. Both counting 19 perf tips on the vertical. I did not know about wet prints which explains other small size variations I have come across thank you!
I believe that all 3d blues were comb perf.
The larger stamp counts 20 perf tips and does not line-up perf wise with the normal. This stamp has always confused me! KGV
