LL Penny Red looks like plate 77 but can't find many examples of the positioning of "77". Thoughts? Thanks

Looks like plate 71 based on the left side. On mprivate 41's stamp, it's the dot in the original design that wasn't removed,

(image corrected to a die II stamp)

plus maybe an engravers slip, on the right side. I say that because the "7" on the right side is (also) sloppily done.

The LL stamp is a Die II hy-brasil, yours is a Die I, unless I'm missing something?

I agree with the above, plate 74.

Plate 77 is exceedingly rare mprivate41.

Okay, my apologies, I should have used Die II, now corrected above. But my understanding that the the engine turning was the same for both, while the head is different, all aside from corner letters.

Yes, the OP knows plate 77 is exceedingly rare. Just how rare it is in practical terms has yet to be learned, I believe. That only comes with experience.

Plus, wasn't there a discussion before about a plate 7something that was badly engraved so it could also be mistaken for a 77? I can't find it. Perhaps even position LL?

Half-a-million quid's worth of rare. Also worth looking at the strange case of the "Victor Hugo" cover.
