They are both 206's. The crescent is not always visible but the upper arabesques have shading lines added, |

It is always suggested that you post scans or photos of the entire cover, even if you are only concerned about the stamps. The Postal Historians can tell you a lot about the covers and they enjoy doing it. |

thanks Rod Cam. That is what I thought just wasn't sure if both could be. In Stamp Smarter it only says stamp was re-engraved. doesn't say both were re engraved. Also is it the added shading under the arabesques or the additional vertical lines added to back ground we are talking about? |

The background is the easiest to see. I think all the re-engraving of the #206 would have been the dies with the secret mark but it is not visible in many cases. |

Another question is how do you differentiate 145 and 156 if they both don't have the secret mark? |

Your last 2 stamps are in order 145 (no secret mark) and 156 (secret mark - dash in pearl to the left of the numeral "1")
The secret mark is how you distinguish them apart. |

But previously you stated that 156 which was re-engraved to make 206 can have both a secret mark or without. So can't 156 be found without a secret mark? And if so how is that determined? Or Am I missing something? |

Leaving aside your apparent misunderstanding of how the 1c was re-engraved in 1881, how would you distinguish a 156 on its normal paper but not showing a secret mark, from a 145 on its normal paper? |
