Paper Question For Scott #9

sorry for the weak pictures, this stamp is not in my possesion yet and this is the best I could make from the pictures provided.

this one has me dazzeled. the paper seems to be layed/ribbeb, both front and back.but both in catalogue and on line I cannot seem to find any like this. not even in siegel powerbase.

anyone any idea?

My guess is that the stamp was mounted in a photo album at some time.

Probably better to wait to have the stamp in your possession.

Some scanners can greatly exaggerate paper texture. Sometimes, but probably not here, such apparent ribbing is completely a scanning/scanner artifact.

Chase, in his 3c book, mentions paper that appears to be ribbed and gives the likely cause. I think that explanation is probably wrong and I have my own opinions.

Just about every 1851 stamp, to varying degrees, will show various textural characteristics that are vertically oriented. It has to do with the manufacture of the paper.
