OK, so that subject line was a bit of a trick....

My entire collection consists of 7 stamps, all of which were a gift from Londonbus1.

By the way, the stamps are beautiful; it's my scanning skills that leave something to be desired. Next time, I'll find a black card to go behind the stamps.

Thanks Londonbus,
Kirk

Nice stamps Kirk

In April, our local club is having it's annual auction. Now, while there are not any B.A.T. in it so far, there are some of the Australian Antarctic Territory stamps in one lot of mixed and used. I know this because I am their auctioneer. I have been for years. Our club does allow the auctioneer to buy any lots provided he / she waits long anough for a bid, or no bids to be entered.

So, to make a long story short, if it doesn't go sky high, I will make a bid on that lot since it is one of the few countries that I continue to collect.

Cheers

Kirk, you beat my collection by 6
Tip:To scan on black, just attach a sheet of black craft paper to
the inside lid of your scanner with "blu tack".
Easily removed, but I doubt you will, after you see the results

Are the stamps only valid for postage in BAT?

Aussies would be challenged to name their own Australian Volcano
and where it is.
(Good question for a quiz night)

There are two active volcanoes.

Mawson Peak on Heard Island is the largest peak in Australia.
McDonald Island is also a volcano and has more than doubled in size in the last 30 years. Both these Islands are about 4000Km South West of Perth.

Well done triggersmob, I am frankly impressed
not many know that, and is a good one for a stamp quiz.
I am not sure about t'other, I'll have to get my researcher on to that.

Thanks for the geography lesson, Rod & Trigger.

Geography was never my strong subject, although I love history and maps. I have a large Peters Projection wall map in my office. I try to spend 5 or 10 minutes a day just staring at it.

I think Philately impels you to gradually, re-vist geography on a constant basis, with ever increasing repetativity.
After 10 years I now have a general understanding of the lie of the land, I know South America well, the US states are still a jumble
albeit I know the fringe states and west and east coast.
Europe is still not passable, esp the Baltic states and the ex Yugoslavia.
If I hear someone talking about a certain country, I can now generally place it immediately in its rough position.
I find it fascinating to understand postal routes, in my neck of the woods "via Brindisi" pops up constantly, and it was a delight to understand that mail route, and why it changed to "via Marseilles" during trouble in Turkey.
I find it all a very enjoyable process.

What worries me now, Rod is the number of kids who grow up in the United States (or any other country) and don't know the basic geography of their own country, much less the world.

We have an interesting dynamic happening these days Kirk,
Information is delivered immediately, to kids in their hands, be it the iphone, or ordered by the mouse.
I feel this creates a lack of desire to commit to memory.
Case in point when I play Scrabble online, one is bombarded with all these outrageous words as people employ sidebar dictionaries, I doubt if they knew
the meaning of half of them, their cynosure is just to win the game.
