cjd, The stamp floating past the back of your boat has a duplex type D17 postmark, canceller device number 15. They were the first type to have the NSW obliterator half in horizontal bars instead of concentric ovals. |

Bobby De La Rue, Your 'SYDNEY' being different to the D17 of the postmarks shown by Cjd and me and also different to the D19 from White, which type would you assign to that version of 15? |

With the GB Pmk Database these would be "Time at top" and "Time in Middle"

Bobby DLR, I'm sure you have other options, but if you need a D17 15 device, you're welcome to one of mine. |

Thank you Cjd, that's very kind of you, but I have moved on from my Sydney collection, in that I'm not actively chasing anything these days. Too busy with other stuff! |

What do the numbers at the bottom mean? I have a Sydney postmark with the date in the middle then a number 1 at the bottom of the circle. |

Hi Skittlelina, The 1 at the bottom of the datestamp is the device number. See my post above dated 6 April 2023 for an example of the 15 device. Hope this helps! |

Quote: See my post above dated 6 April 2023 Bobby De La Rue is referring to his post from the 16th of April 2023. The device was the canceller that was used to apply the postmark. An old railway duplex canceller can be seen in this thread: https://goscf.com/t/83389 |

No, just the good old philatelic eye for detail that might save someone from a typo-induced futile hunt! I've made more than a few myself |
