Recently acquired this book. Seems useful. Does anyone know anything about it?

I collect dead countries and I use my copy frequently. With all the detailed images provided I feel fairly comfortable buying these issues. Perhaps I shouldn't have been surprised, but many dealers' stocks are riddles with forgeries.

Thanks to you both. I've just finished working my way through this book and am happy that no one has disparaged it. Found quite a few forgeries/counterfeits in my collection. Disappointing? On the contrary; it adds interest. I can separate the false from the genuine, label each as such, arrange them near one another for comparison, etc. Plus, the process of investigating was fun. So much better than the frustration I felt when Scott and other catalogues say "counterfeits abound" but give no hint how to recognize them. There are of course web sites for counterfeits. Having a handy reference for the common stamps of so many different countries is worth the money nevertheless. (I still break my head over Armenian overprints, but apparently everyone does.)

EMaxim: thanks for posting about this book. I also recently bought a copy, from a surplus book sale at Rocky Mountain Philatelic Library, but have not had time yet to review it (yes, I'll put in another "shameless plug" for the library).

You also wrote: "the frustration I felt when Scott and other catalogues say 'counterfeits about,' but give no hint how to recognize them." I shared your frustration in years past. Perhaps such details are not part of what a general catalogue is supposed to do.

But, as I began to specialize in several countries, up to 30 years ago, I sought out the resources available through various specialist societies; not just their and other web sites, but also print publications. As examples, I've found these publications to be highly useful. And I have others:

1) "Forgeries of Portugal and Colonies," by the late D,J. Davies 2) "A Catalogue of the Stamps of Mexico, 1856-1910," by Nicholas Follansbee.

I've also found the Serrane Guide, published by the APS, to be a marvelous resource. Even Serrane says, in places, "you have to do comparisons." But doesn't give examples. Nothing is perfect.

I collect both Portugal and Mexico; will look for affordable copies of both those books. Ditto for Serrane. Thanks for the tip.
