I mailed myself a registered cover 3 days ago. The town I mailed this from is only 30 miles from my house, so I was pretty bummed yesterday when it did not arrive.
Years ago when I was newly married, my wife wanted me to take her to a stamp auction that I was attending (In Portland - about a 3 hour drive) to try and 'understand' my hobby. We walked into the viewing room and about half the men in the room reflexively started to stand up. She was only about 25, while most of the men were closer to 125, and all the attention really freaked her out. There were a lot of stares and since she was generally fairly shy, the attention wasn't a positive thing. It was a multi-day affair, and on our way home she said something like, "I am glad I went, but I won't be going to any in the future." I applauded her effort, but if the interest isn't there, it simply isn't there. Although she had no interest in the hobby, she had her own, and we both understood that the other's hobbies were part of what made him/her who he/she was.
They say that Men are from Mars and Women are from Ve...or more likely a galaxy far far away. Anybody who became a stamp collector to meet girls will likely be disappointed. But our wives (or spouses however defined) are perhaps the real heroes. For about 15 years from 1985 to about 2000, my wife used to drive me all over Ireland on detours into very small villages to buy postcards as souvenirs. Back then of course, I did not know that Technology would intervene and postcards would rarely be seen in 2020. Still I have about 2,200 unposted Irish cards. I have never driven a car in my life so my wife has clocked up a lot of miles for me...and of course that includes stamp fairs in a lot of cities. She has of course no interest at all in postcards although my observation thru Facebook friends etc is that Men collect stamps and Women collect postcards. But on 5th March, I sent myself some new issues from Dublin and of course one stamp was not cancelled. So around 8pm we self isolated in the car and my wife drove me to a village just over the north-south border just so that I could re-post the envelope. The thought of being locked down for months without being fully up to date with new issues (mint and used) was unbearable. Now I am not going to say my wife was uncomplaining. Truth is she complained the whole way there and the whole way back. But the envelope arrived yesterday....cancelled...and I am happy.
