A few words about defining what an ugly stamp is. With mint stamps, only the design contributes to the ugliness but with used speciments, the cancellation can generate all of the problems. As a matter of curiosity, what is the relative value of the two injured kangaroos pictured above? How does this value compare to a collection of a thousand defferent animal stamps of all sizes? I need experience determining the value of common and unusual lots or mixtures. What are the most common stamps in the entire world? What is the value of 10,000? 100,000? How does the value of each lot compare to the cost of shipping half way around the globe? Lizardly; halflizard
Anything too dumb to say should be repeated at least twice.

Personally, I didn't feel comfortable judging lot values until about 4 years of attending auctions, you gradually get a feel for value as time marches.
Things still baffle, minisheets can be floorsweepings or extremely expensive, nothing beats country knowledge, at our last stamp meeting, there was a discussion about the rise in price of "phossick boxes" v the price of classic singular items. It was the consensus that a lot of collectors still like the adventure of rooting through boxes of jetsam in the quest for the unusual (to them).
I have given up bidding for the "allsorts" boxes, they are way too expensive, I have found the joy of "circuit sheets" they seem to have the best value locally now.

Yes Rod I very much agree! 5 years ago was the last box of stamps I won at auction and landed some out standing KGVs. I gave up bidding on them 3 years ago. The price v risk has become to great. I very much miss them. Even stock book buys are getting a bit out there. I think a lot of the good material is not being sent to auction at the present time. Hopefully as the world recovers from recent trends more good material will come on offer and prices will stay the same but quality will increase. |

This has got to be the ugliest bundle of stamps I ever have had! It is going to take some time to salvage this lot. |

Kirk. They are used but I would think that a lot of gum is on them. In the same lot was another bundle from the same issue in normal condition. Yes!I am hoping very much that they will self straighten with a good soak. KGV
Russ! That is one ugly stamp. I have some favorites in that condition. KGV |

John, soak for 20 mins, lay on a clean tea towel and pat dry place between a clean piece of A4 and a freezer bag place in a book for 3 days and they will be as flat as witch's knocker.

This is one of my ugliest overprints, but also the best example of this stamp at present. |
