There are some things I know and some things I know I don't know. I am working on some 3c imperfs and the album is full of the previous owners markings. He's marked many of these as double and triple transfers. Though I can recognize more obvious double transfers, I know I don't know this area well. So if you are so inclined, have a look. I won't be surprised if the person saw things that aren't there. The first 4 on the top row were marked double transfer. The last 2 on the top were marked triple transfer. I see some, but there is no way I can verify this myself. The second row is just for entertainment. No double transfers, but some nice looking stamps. If you see a stamp there that might be worth me taking a harder look at, please let me know. I can provide a more detailed image of any one of these if you need to see more detail. (for those who don't know me: I break down collections for resale. I find so much great knowledge here and I donate to SCF to show my appreciation)

Looking at these images now, I realize that they probably do not show enough detail for transfers. I should probably do them as separate files. I'll get on that. |

I don't see anything special about this group. I do collect double transfers; my experience is that they are usually in the lettering or the rosettes. |

lol - thanks guys
The dark stamp on the second row was marked Plum. Just discolored or how would you describe that?
The third stamp on the bottom looks like a candidate for a #10 - anyone want to give that a look? |

2nd stamp at bottom looks likely sulfuretted. That often makes these look more plum like.
3rd stamp does not look orange brown. |

Quote: No one can really tell shades on a PC, especially subtle shades. I totally agree but the stamp doesn't exhibit the fine engraving one often sees on OBs, and, instead looks more like a later - circa 1855+ era printing. |

OK, I'm going to attempt to plate that one stamp - I'm not very good at it, but will give it a shot. Anyone want to suggest a starting point? I also want to say thanks. Even though none of these are turning out to have any significant value, you've saved me a lot of headache trying to sweat out what is and isn't there. Now I can just add these to my 11s and 11As and move on. Here's the one I want to work on some more: |

I do agree that a knowledgeable collector can tell a lot from the impressions, I do so with first issue revenues. |

That's a better scan. Its probably worth trying to plate it, to be sure. I don't have time to do that now unfortunately. |

If this were my stamp and I was needing to plate it I would start with plate 5L. That advice and $6.00 will get you an overpriced cup of coffee. |

That is a huge jump to go from "here is a stamp" to "5L". For those trying to learn the baby steps, what are the basic characteristics which pointed toward 5L, versus some other plate? |
