Here is the Scott 717 " Medium-Value Tree Definitives" stamps.

Below is the stamp I am referring to...

Here is a close up of the shifted brown branch colour.

Here is why I believe the shifted colour print was done on purpose.
I used GIMP to show what would happen if the brown colour was printed directly over the tree branch....Date would disappear..Just saying.

Robert

Wert. Your copy appears to be very, very dark when compared to mine. Here, the brown is over the date, but is still visible.

Partime, not sure but I believe there were at least two printings of this issue. It may have been printed by another printer? Maybe your copy is by Canadian Bank note company.

Partime, your image of stamp 717 is pretty much the same as mine, a little darker for me due to my scaner adjustments. The date is visible through the brown of the branch and there is only one printer for the 717 (DF) and 717i (LF) BABN. There are unfortunately a lot of stamps with color shift, the quality control is not very rigorous. On my 717i plate block of 10, the brown is shifted upward like what wert is showing.

Partime
Just looking at your stamp..Colour is very light.
My stamp block matches the colour density shown in Unitrade Catalouge

Robert

My stamp colour on the right..

Your stamp back ground looks almost gray..strange.

Wert, you sure come up with some "interesting" theories.

Here are a couple of my Scott 717 examples which show a slight colour shift when comparing the PB one and the single.

Bad science. Asserting "Color shift done on purpose" with only one block as evidence out of the millions printed is simply poor methodology. One block is not proof of anything.

And what happens if the black is printed over the brown?

'Intention' is often thin ice, especially when it comes to stamp design and/or artistic license. You basically have to have direct knowledge from the designer or a documented specification from a printer that unequivocally and unambiguously calls out the intention. Without this Occam's razor applies, the simplest explanation is the way to bet.

The black (engraved) was printed over the brown (photogravure).

The printer BABN used the Goebel printing press which was
capable of printing 4 colours photogravure and 3 colours engraved,
all on one pass through the press.
One of the photogravure stations was used to print the tagging
bars.

If you read what I wrote..It is a theory..NOT proof of anything.

Having fun with collectors..That's all..Ok.

Wert, Your title line asserts something very strongly as true which isn't proven at all. This entire thread should be deleted as unproven.

Personally I'm against any kind of deletion unless there is
something obscene written or pictured.

It would have been better if wert had placed a question mark at
the end of the title.

He did state in his first post Here is why I believe the shifted colour print was done on purpose.

He believed. He didn't assert something very strongly as true

I see it, but his "belief" statement is all the way to the end. Sorry, the headline is unproven if not outright false, thus the post is misleading.

I often try to use something like 'In my opinion' in my posts. We do have hundreds and hundreds of anonymous folks who read the threads every day, many for whom English is not their first language, so as any fly-speccer will tell you 'details count' (whether it be on a stamp or in a post).
