Hello,
here is the solution for the french stamp cancelled T. SABL. It's a railway cancellation. The letter is stamped in a post-wagon. It was usual between 1852 and 1890. It is the railway line Tours - Sables D'olonne. T for Tours and SABL. for Sables D'Olonnes. The letter was posted in La Chaize-Le-Vicomte in the coutry Vendée. Cancellation was used from 1876 to 1879. The cancellation T. SABL. is rare. In Pothion catalogue his price is 300 euros on letter and 100 Euros on stamp. Hope it help? |

Bravo Harald, I made a search yesterday and I couldn't find about the cancel T.SABL. I pay interest because I was in Vendée last may in Royan. We wanted to see the ocean coming from Bourges and Amboise. |

And yet another one for Rod222 A nice clean squared circle, uninterrupted by nasty postage stamps: From Tikamgarh, the de facto capital of Orchha State (the old town of Orchha is very picturesque ( http://www.shunya.net/Pictures/Nort.../Orchha.htm) but wasn't practical as a State capital) to the village of Jatara. From the address side, it appears this was an official mail cover, so went unstamped. |

Many thanks, Harald! I might have missed your Welcome thread, so I'll take the chance to say, "Welcome." (I'd say, " Bienvenue" but my French is rusty...) Great info. Collin |

When you see an octagonal cancel on a stamp of France or her colonies, the first thought is "seapost" or mail boat. A couple different routes went into and out of Bordeaux...anyone recognize this one? I've looked at a bunch, but haven't been able to match it up. Another scallop/ondule convoyeur (RPO) cancel, this time for the rail line from St. Louis south to Dakar: Not a great strike, but legible. |

Not exactly a postmark, but a cancel, nonetheless. A paquebot cancel on Edward VII from the Leeward Islands... |

Quote: When you see an octagonal cancel on a stamp of France or her colonies, the first thought is "seapost" or mail boat. Interesting, Cjd. Is that a general rule for octagonal french cancels - that they signify post by boat? I think I might have some lurking amongst my French pages - I'll have to have a look. |

Here are two of my favourites. A Jordan stamp cancelled in Jerusalem: And a German stamp commemorating the 1935 annexation of the Saarland, cancelled in that same year in the region capital Saarbrücken. Martin |

Stampgal-
Not always. You have to look for a clue on the postmark itself, because the octagon is most often used as a mailboat/paquebot cancel, or a late posting cancel. If you have an octagon with Paris, for instance, that is pretty likely to be a cancel on a letter mailed after the last pickup. Especially if it says E1, E2 or E3 in the middle portion, as that related to an extra charge being assessed.
If you are lucky enough to see the letters PAQ, then you know what you have. Otherwise, try to sort out the port cities that would be part of established routes. I have a pdf with the ship routes, and if I was as organized as Rod, I would have already posted it here.

Cjd Very interesting. I'm impress by the information that is shared on SCF. Coming from you and the others, believe me I learn much more here than I ever did in my stamp club. It's been a long time I went there. Thank you all. Daniel. |
