A couple of items from the last days of the Soruth/Saurashtra/Junagadh State PO in India: Used from Un or Una on 12 June 1949 These are ordinary postage stamps over-written 'SARKARI' ('Service') to serve as Official stamps. Conditions were chaotic in the State, as the Nawab had tried unsuccessfully to join Pakistan in 1947 and then fled, to be succeeded by an Executive Council which had bigger things on its mind; supplies of properly overprinted stamps had run out and the State PO was scheduled for closure at the end of March next year anyway. Nevertheless, the State public servants couldn't have a government letter go out using just ordinary stamps, so they dutifully overprinted them. These stamps are mentioned in a footnote at the end of Gibbons' listing of Soruth. And one, from the same period, for the TPO lovers: This is the May 1949 ONE ANNA surcharge, SG 59, with a Veraval Railway Train CDS, from the TPO that linked the port town of Veraval with the capital Junagadh. And finally one from just before the end: The surcharge was issued on the 2 March 1950, and the State PO was finally closed down on the 30 March, giving just a 28 day window for the stamp. Here it was cancelled at Junagadh on the 23 March, a week before the music stopped forever |

Lovely material Tony.
Just one brickbat, I know you collect using Hagner's only, does all this juicy subsidiary information become lost to all but those collectors belonging to SCF ?

... and another place, as well, Rod. But basically, much of the information is in my head. On the other hand, most of the information is gleaned from a variety of published sources. Gibbons is a great one for the basics, and the India Study Circle Soruth Handbook has far more than any (normal) person could need. There are also tertiary sources: and finally, this is an example of how I usually store any interesting items in my stockbooks. Is that sufficient to turn away your wrath? |

Wrath duly placated :) Lovely certificate. I am of the mind all good philatelists are niggardly in explanation. I think it stems from competition rules. Myself, I like chapter and verse.

I have a problem noting information about my stamps in my stockbooks. Too much information will only clog up the system, and as long as I know (as long as I still have all my marbles) where to look for amplification, there really isn't any need to include it with the stamp.
When my lovely heir and successor comes to dispose of my collection, knowing nothing of stamps anyway, all that information would be wasted, and only serve to confuse. I've left her detailed instructions on the auction houses to contact, with the Excel spreadsheets I've described elsewhere. That should be sufficient to get the sale process under weigh. The specialists will know what they're looking at, like that small A and large A in Anna on the Soruth SG O17.
For my Barwani collection only, where I have done original research, I have included extensive notes in the stockbooks. However, most of the information has been published in various journals anyway, so it won't be lost. |

Thought on this cold snowy day for much of Eastern North America I'd post this, for pre-1919 stamps I try as much as possible to collect CDS or clear number cancellations. French Polynesia Scott #49, used on 30 April 1929 at Atouna, the main settlement on Hiva Oa island in the Marquesas. While the stamp itself is off-center, the less-common cancel I think makes it a nice addition to my collection. |

Another for the topic. I believe this stamp was created as a convenience for Hawaiian mailers of parcels. |

The Bhopal Squared Circle isn't particularly rare, but it is on a combination cover with a Bhopal stamp (in this case, the 1891 ˝ Anna red). And with nice CALCUTTA NIGHT SORTING and BOW BAZAAR CDSs as well, it's one of the best pieces in my Bhopal collection. |
