Thanks John, for the Bring Up My Post BUMP there. I had searched for this thread for a while, calling it cancels instead of postmarks. Learn every day. Here is a 2014 Canary Island's postmark / cancel from Galdar, having Spanish (Spain) stamps on it. It's great buying on ebay from everywhere! |

I saved this and the rest of the picture from ebay I think to show me the variety of cancels available on France stamps. These are Ceres type of stamps shown. A losange (diamond-shaped to me) with numeral in center, A ondule convoyeur (corrugated circle for railway) and A circular (rond) postmark. |

Thanks Doug! Yes I started this thread what seems like a long time ago now. It was in the days that a postmark was a postmark. lol But cancel would be a much better name for it now, as I have become more global in my thinking! |

Quote: But cancel would be a much better name for it now, . . . I think I will say that I am somewhat lazy in using the word cancel, an abbreviation for cancellation I believe, so the word postmark is more correct worldwide. Lazy Puzzler |

Postmark - markings to indicate the office of origin or manner of postal conveyance. Sometimes there also receiving postmarks of the post office in destination or of transit. Other post office markings include: advertised, forwarded, mail route, missent , paid, not paid, second delivery, too late, etc. Postmarks often serve to cancel postage stamps with or without additional obliterating cancels.
Cancellations - postal markings that make further use of stamps impossible. Cancellations include both postmarks used in cancellations and obliterations intended primarily to cancel, or kill, the stamp.

Quote: Postmark - markings to indicate the office of origin or manner of postal conveyance. Postmarks are also used to indicate the time mark, the day, month and year, and the time of day, that the piece of mail went through that exact point in the mail stream system. This is to track how well the system works or doesn't work at times. |

Going back to the postcard that stampfan9 posted, this is very likely the person to whom it was addressed (Mildred (Yauger) Black of Mount Vernon, OH) ... she lived to the ripe old age of 94 ... but it would have made her only about 14 years old at the time the postcard was sent in 1916: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/f...d=100366365&Another interesting point about the postmark on that postcard is the date: The time is stamped 7 PM on February 12, 1916 would have been a Saturday night ... perhaps nothing out of the ordinary, but a night time postmark on a Saturday from 98+ years ago is not too common to find. |

most mail is processed at night today, I don't know about 1916 but modern is 3 tours 1,2,3 with the swing shift, graveyard and day shift.
the day shift not much processing of mail it is when the mechanics clean the machines and find mail that is under machines, cleaning crew stuff. day time is for collecting the mail,or delivering, evening night for processing.
the main processing starts around 330pm or sooner depends on overtime and time of the year ie xmas time.
window clerks are 9-5 jobs or bids but the processing behind the closing goes on 24 hours a day.
old time post offices who knows back then but large cities may have had crews processing day collected mail at night.
