From 1840 to 1968, postage in the UK was a universal rate for a standard item. In 1968, an extra penny was payable for 1st class post. The inevitable assumption was that 2nd class post would be delayed, which wasn't really the case.

I've recently found these two covers, which are part of a privately-produced satirical protest against the introduction of 2nd class postage in 1968. They fit very nicely into my Rowland Hill collection. One of the covers has an insert, stating that five different covers were available. I would appreciate any help whatsoever in finding these!

I too would like to get hold of these.
I will keep a look out for you Dave...if you would do the same for me.

I had never seen them before. Do you know who produced them ?

Londonbus1....I wish to write and congratulate them !

The trouble with this forum,
is that there is too much to covet.
It's like being in the lolly shop,
and your last penny just rolled into the street drain, and went "plop"

They are nice, aren't they Michael? I'll let you know if I see any more of them

Here's the insert card, which has a reproduction of the first envelope on the reverse. They were produced by a chap named Jon Baker in Hinkley Leicestershire

It was much (or at least somewhat) cheaper sitting alone in the dark...

When I was a kid, the Scott catalogue marked the extent of my known stamp universe, and it was unimaginably vast...little did I know what I didn't know.

Are you richer than me Michael?

Sadly not

My pockets are quite empty until after the big show in May.
But I still love these covers.

They are pricey though aren't they.

Indeed, after 11 years, you would think one would have come across most things, and yet at our last club meeting, a member displayed her collection of NZ stamps woven with foil. A security measure.
Never seen it before, it just continually amazes the vastness, and on occaisions the dedication of some collectors.

Hi Kirk,

It's probably "ARIBA" or "Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects".

Two more of Jon Baker's covers... a variation on some of the ones already shown.

Included with the second cover is this letter... Story Of a Protest
