I'm just wondering how a stamp which I have compared to a stamp for sale on the internet with the same year etc is worth e.g. $90 when I paid $1 for mine?? Just thought I'd ask.They are both used but in very fine condition,mine is slightly better centred,but where it has been separated from the stamnp next to it along the perforations is not quite as good along about 3 of the perforation but is slight.I am just wondering *how valuations are done?? There is no mention of any different watermark etc for the one for sale.Just wondering.

Could you post a picture of the stamp in question? There are possibly a number of reasons why two stamps which appear similar have very different catalog "values."

Thanks for the replies!Great to be here.I have uploaded the stamp I mentioned,its a 1964 Australian Anniversay of First Airmail stamp,and I am using the Renniks Stamps of Australia book for identification and pricing of the stamps.
As I was saying there seems to be such a lot of variation in pricing and the stamps do not seem that different to each other in certain cases,so I am wondering how valuation really works? I am gathering I think I need a more detailed book on each stamp and their variations than the one I am using,would anyone suggest a better one? I am guessing that would be the Scott catalogs?
I paid $1 for this stamp,so I am not expecting anything much more than what I paid for some years ago.I was just looking out of curiousity and information and a case study on how to value stamps and how much difference it could make.
Anyone have any comments on this stamp?And what makes it a $1 stamp?(The stamp is also in a hagner sheet in the photo)

As I said earlier, anyone is able to ask any price that they desire, but more important is the SOLD values. What you have posted is indeed the 1964 50th Anniversary of the First Air Mail in Australia. According to the Australian Commonwealth Specialists Catalogue (ACSC), there were 43,000,000 stamps issued with the 5d value (the one you posted). There were also 1,500,000 stamps issued with the 2/3d value, a red stamp.

The 5d is valued at only US$0.25 in my latest Scott's catalog in used condition, and probably less in the ACSC catalog. There are some very specialized varieties that are worth more, including one noted as "Re-Entry to second A of Australia and back fuselage of plane." There is also another variety stated as "Plate fracture in right margin" which can only be seen if you have the right margin attached to the stamp, which you don't. So, unfortunately, I am only seeing a stamp with a real value of less than 5 cents.

For Australia, I always recommend the ACSC catalogs, which can be a bit pricey, but they have LOTS of nice information. Good luck.
