Does anyone have a conversion chart for the Machins? Looking for one that has both the SG number along with the corresponding Scott number for each stamp.

If you find one, please let me know. I've also been looking. Some dealer sites have subsets of the mapping based on their stock and noth cat nos., but neither SG nor Scott are enthusiastic about such a mapping being published. |

This subject comes up regularly. https://goscf.com/t/55976Note the post by Angore: Quote: For Machins, It is not an easy task to correlate Scott to SG as SG lists so many more. One Scott number often is multiple SG numbers because Scott ignores tagging. Now Scott does list thick/thin values and not all these map to an SG Concise number. And this is just if with SG number you mean SG Concise numbers. SG also has a specialised Machins catalogue that has even more numbers and a numbering system that is different from their ordinary "SG" numbers. |

The "others" is the Machin Collectors Club catalogue. I find specialised dealers such as John M Deering and previously Mike Holt rarely use the MCC listing. John uses the Connoisseur Catalogue. Each lists varieties that others do not. |

Bumping this thread from 2020... Now, 3 years on from the last post, I wonder which is the preferred specialist catalog for Machins. I got the impression that SG is not considered by those in-the-know to be "complete enough," however it is the go-to for most collectors. https://adminware.ca/machin/m019o.htm seems like a site with a lot of info, but not accepted catalog numbers. Deegam has apparently been updated, either in 2021 or 2023. It's electronic which is awesome, and appears to be 45 quid for a new client. My concern with Deegam related to NSK's comments that not many sellers refer to Deegam. http://connoisseurcatalogue.net/about.htm has a website but I cannot find any notations that indicate the catalog has been updated since 2001. That said, as I peruse the listings available online for single stamps, it seems that stamps have been updated through at least 2020. NSK has also mentioned in SCF that this catalog is not frequently referenced. Opinions about my summaries above? Which catalog(s) offer the best blend of most varieties listed and establishing a common language with sellers? |

With Machins, where you draw the line depends on your interests. The details get into printers, gum, tagging variations (type, bar width), screen, value position, source (sheet, booklet, coil). perforations, EME vs non-EME, paper, etc, etc. I believe specialists need to find dealers and just work with them no matter what catalog is used. Here is a dealer cross reference. http://www.sutherlandphilatelics.co...bspcmach.pdfExample - Adminware Specialist page |

Quote:http://connoisseurcatalogue.net/about.htm has a website but I cannot find any notations that indicate the catalog has been updated since 2001. That said, as I peruse the listings available online for single stamps, it seems that stamps have been updated through at least 2020. NSK has also mentioned in SCF that this catalog is not frequently referenced. James Skinner was the man behind B. Alan Stamps Ltd.. You could order the stamps as listed in this catalogue from that company. He closed down the business in June. http://connoisseurcatalogue.net/cat...hapter3b.pdfScroll to the bottom and you will see that the listing, at least, has been updated to 2017, but the copyright notice suggests 2021. Bear in mind the "MCC" column is not the widely used Connoisseur Catalogue, but the rarest of the specialised catalogues, that of the Machin Collectors Club. It is quoted even more rarely than Deegam. Also, whereas the listing seems to have been updated until at least 2022, the Stanley Gibbons (Specialised) and MCC listings are quite old. I understand that the Stanley Gibbons Concise listing has been revised, recently. This should not be confused with the SG Specialised listing that has its own numbering. The adminware website is somewhere in between the SG Specialised and Deegam listings. |

I'm still curious as to which catalog most machin specialists use to communicate about buying/selling with dealers. |

What is a specialist?
The one used most will be the Stanley Gibbons Great Britain Concise Catalogue. That, already, is a very comprehensive listing. Machin specialists will quote the catalogue they are using. Then, they find out their dealer only sorts out the stamps at the level of the GB Concise level.
The most quoted specialised catalogue that dealers will use, probably, remains the Stanley Gibbons specialised Vol. 3 and 4. Vol. 4 was last published in 2008, and part one was reprinted in 2010. However, those who use the Machin Collectors Club Catalogue, Connoisseur Catalogue, or Deegam Handbook consider that a 'nice' try.
The names I mentioned somewhere (Mike Holt, John M. Deering, and B. Alan Stamps) had specialised new issue services. Only John M. Deering remains. He and, unsurprisingly, B. Alan Stamps used the Connoisseur Catalogue. John, however, can provide Deegam numbers, but he may not have time to process your order quickly. Mike Holt also tended to use the Connoisseur Catalogue.
Sutton Stamps that is very close to the Machin Collectors Club, surprisingly, only uses GB Concise numbers on its website.
If you are looking to add at a level more detailed than SG Specialised, frustration is around the corner. |

Thanks NSK, that is a very useful bit of info. I can't imagine relying on a catalog that covers modern new issues that was last issued in 2010 but at least you've illuminated the rules of engagement. |
