Hello there - I am new here in this forum. I inherited some stamps a few years ago from my grandfather (whom is now deceased) and I packed them away in a closet. I recently looked through them and found they were all in protective coverings and in mint/never used condition.

One sheet of 8 stamps in particular has an article with it that says it is from vintage 1996 and known as the "Famous Faces of the 20th Century" error stamp sheet. It states that it is also called "The Kiss That Shocked The World" because if the sheet is folded in a certain way, John Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe are facing each other and it appears that they are getting ready to kiss.

This stamp sheet features 3 different errors. 1) Marilyn Monroe is misspelled as Marylyn Monroe, 2) Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis is misspelled as Jacqueline Kennedy O'Nassis and 3) Mao Tse Tung is misspelled as Mao Tse Tong.

Hope someone can help because I cannot find any information and I really don't know anything about stamps.

Thank you for your time!

Hi - A big thanks to Peter and GeoffHa. I am confused about that auction - don't understand how the stamp sheet can be a scam because the 3 name spelling errors are clearly visible. Also I think it is odd that the seller is not mentioning the errors in the auction.

There is also a cut-out picture that shows the sheet bent in a way that looks like JFK and Monroe are getting ready to kiss.

Thanks for your help and have a great day!

Jessie

"Scam" is a typo for "scan", although it's inadvertently appropriate because these things were made for the philatelic market, rather than for genuine postal use. The manglings of names aren't errors in the sense of accidental faults incurred during the production process, but sloppy sub-editing.

As noted above, the spelling errors aren't "errors" in the normal sense for stamps, just misspellings by the designers of the stamp. "Willie Brandt" is usually known as "Willy Brandt" and "Sung Ching Ling" (Madame Sun Yat-sen), is usually spelled as "Soong Ching-Ling". Although it's possible that the English spellings of some of these names have changed over time.
