Do You Have Scott #1 And/Or Scott #2? Tell US How Did You Get/Buy It And If Possible Post A Picture

I'm thinking of acquiring these stamps as an investment, but I understand they are not cheap. Would you mind sharing your experience getting/buying these stamps?

#1 is pretty easy to come by and is regularly up for auction on ebay. 4 margins, used starting around $100+ and UP depending on which shade, condition, etc...#2 is harder to come by and typically much more expensive as a 4 margin, used, in great condition. Again, at auction you might pick up a nice copy starting around $500+, but I think $700 is more typical (and UP).

I have collected several singles, and 2 pairs of each, plus reprints, proofs, essays, etc... #1 is one of the first I "had" to have, I waited quite awhile before I tackled #2 as one of the last hard to fill spots in my albums.

The usual word is "gamble", rather than "investment".

These are stamps that any collector would love to own, but both are plentiful enough that you should not count on making an investment profit on them unless you acquire the highest-level "investment grade" examples to begin with.

I have owned many and lost money or broke even selling each one. This is my favorite two that I once owned:

Investment was an aphorism :) I would buy them to keep. Just not sure whether it is a wise acquisition from a collector's point of view. For that amount of money I can probably get a lot of other old stamps that I don't currently have on my album.

Nio - Do you have a plan? An area of interest? Or are you finding your way right now?

Just randomly buying Brazil and USA stamps right now. To collect for fun, not for profit (hobby). Of course trying to be responsible not to go broke with a bunch of stamp albums on my bookcase

Candid opinion, and don't get me wrong, but your not ready to buy a #1 yet.

That's one that goes in the "definitely NOT a soaker" file.

I held out for fault-free and 4 margins. I got my 5c at Siegel and 10c at Kelleher. The 10c has a VF80 grade.

I had always wanted one since I started collecting. Something about having an example of the first US stamp intrigued me. Like having a Mickey Mantle rookie card! I eventually got one 10 years ago (after 40 years since starting collecting). Since it was a significant investment for me, I looked for one that had a certificate.
