Picked up my new computer yesterday. Being ignorant of the finer points of IT, I need to query the accreditation.
Win10 was already loaded, I told the builder, I was going to delete everything, including partitions and do a fresh install of Win10 myself.
I had expected to get a Wind 10 retail box etc etc, but was given nothing, on querying what I do, if I have a software crash, and need to load again, what do I do, I was not even given a Product Code.
After insistance, he went into another room and fossicked around and printed me out a product code.
My query is, when I now do a fresh install, will this product code be sufficient to comply with Microsoft headquarters? Or, will I need to go out and but a further retail box . (approx $200) Thanks for any guidance.
PS: I had confirmed in previous email transfers, that I was getting a genuine OEM Win 10 pro. (Original Equipment Manufacture) I just don't understand these Win10 keys for sale on the internet etc.
It's been a while since I did a Windows reinstall, but IIRC, if you haven't changed any of the hardware between wiping the old copy and reinstalling the new, it should work without doing anything other than re-entering the product code. When your code is first registered on the original build, it notes what hardware is installed and sends that with the activation, and that Windows to verify that you're installing on the same machine. Also, if you have a Microsoft account and use that as the login to your computer, the product code gets associated with your account, making it easy to deactivate and reactivate as necessary.
Hi Postmaster, thanks for responding, I was hoping you or Don would reply for reliable advice. I have not touched the new computer as yet, I'll use this Win 7 as the link to advice, while I re install on the new.
I'll check youf link, and work through it.
This is my guru for re install Warning : very long winded, but excellent advice for fresh install reasoning.
If the computer is pre-loaded with Windows 10 Pro, then login with your Microsoft account and let it activate. This should save the activation code to your Microsoft ID.
Then if you do a reinstall, it should just activate without you needing to do anything. If that doesn't work, you can always change you Windows 10 key to the one provided and reactivate it.
One thing to note. OEM keys are locked to the hardware. Retail keys are locked to the install. So, if you were to buy a new computer and activate it with the code provided (assuming you used it), it would not activate. If you had a retail copy, it would deactivate the old computer and activate the new one.
Thank you Apastuszak...that was interesting, My printout from the builder reads....... "Windows 10 Professional 32 64bit Retail Key"
The builders comments were something like.... "Companies may buy say 30 licences to cover their staff, if only 25 are used, the other 5 are purchased / sourced by other companies and sold at a discount" That's what I use.
First Steps Win 10 new system. Could not use the keyboard, any attempts at @ gave me a " Sorted after 20 mins, I had to change to US Keyboard in settings.
