What Happened To Stamp Hinges!

So far I've tried 3 different brands, G & K Prefolded, Prinz Prefolded and Supersafe Prefolded. The Supersafe seem to be the best, then Prinz, and I won't be ordering any more G & K. The G & K are way too stiff, and the adhesive is far too strong. If you over dampen the hinge when you attach it to the stamp, it will "curl" the stamp when it dries. My question is,javascript:insertsmilie('') has anyone found anything like the old Dennisen or the "Fold-O-Hinge" from Harold Cohn & Co.? I always found those hinges were great. They separated easily, were never too stiff, very well folded and proportioned and CHEAP! Does anyone have a source for hinges they really like and are similar to the one's I mentioned. HELP.

I wish I knew what happened to my stamps hinges?? I have them in a Chinese tea tin and for the life of me can't find them

Wow, do those packages of the original "Dennison" folded hinges go for big bucks :(

You would think someone in the industry would get a clue. If someone started making hinges like the original Dennison hinges they would corner the market and make a lot of money.

Subway tried. Even bought the original machinery used to manufacture the Dennison hinges. But the initial product was a failure. The machine has been mothballed and the project shelved.

Even if someone succeeded, that would only result in a major drop in price for the Dennisons. There just isn't enough demand to support a new entry into the market; mint stamp collectors are all going MNH and they want mounts, stockbooks, or hingeless albums.

I've used Supersafe for years and am very happy with them. Sometimes the problem of separating them arises...but that's just my aging fingers. My USA album is 100% Mystic black back-ground mounts. My Aussy collection gets the mounts for MNHs. Hinges for used.

In all seriousness, I've never been able to apply hinges correctly. I either have them too damp or not damp enough.

But then again, I do drool a lot.

I dislike the whole idea of licking hinges. I prefer a sponge - barely dampened. Just brush the hinge on the sponge. I've also used a paper towel instead of sponge. Many things will work, just remember the BARELY damp part.

Kirk, I like a Q-tip barely dampened. Then when finished it doesn't go to waste, I clean my ears.
