Scott 738-739 - Stamp Colour Differences..??

Here is an oddity that I can not explain...Take a look at these Scott 738-739 "Famous Canadians" stamps...Look at the Sir Sanford Fleming stamp. The top right and bottom left stamps seems to be different colours even though they are on the same block, same sheet.

Below is the difference in colours. One {bottom} stamp lighter in colour.




I really don't know how that this oddity happens...Seen it on a couple of blocks.

What is your colour app actually reading: a specific pixel or or an average colour across the stamp's image? Could it also be that your scanner doesn't have a totally uniform intensity of the scanning lamp or sensitivity of the pick-up heads across the width of the image. I detect a slight colour difference between the other two stamps also. The upper left instance seems duller than the bottom right.

Something you could perhaps try is to scan the image, then rotate the block 180 degrees being very careful to place it in exactly the same spot on the platen then scan again. If there is a colour difference between the two stamps, the colour difference will rotate in the two scanner images. If it is due to scanner inconsistencies, it will not.

I also noticed a slight anomaly between the two Fleming stamps. In the bottom left instance's top right corner, the colour extends beyond the stamp background's top shading line.

Hi Robert, is it possible there is just a bit of overinking? What I noticed most about these stamps is that it appears you missed the very things a flyspecker like you would normally pick up on.

On the lower Flemming stamp, in the fourth background line just right of his head there appears to be an inkspot.

And also look at the top right corner, another brown spot extending beyond the stamp image itself. Edit: just noted that was previously mentioned by itma.
