I was just browsing the lots in the Kelleher auction 5116 when I came across this one. How exactly did this make the auction? It's a bog common Scott 65that is horribly centered with bad perfs and the the auction adds "several creases, otherwise fine). Don't get me wrong I find nothing wrong with the listing but I'm shocked it's been bid up to $8 with a "suggested bid of $16" for this dog.

Having bought and sold a fair amount of stuff in Kelleher auctions, methinks that what might be happening here is that there is not an actual bid of $8. They set an estimate (in this case $16) and start the bidding at half that. Whatever the truth there, it is a question as to why the suggested bid is as high as $16 unless there's something about the cancel, etc. that's special - I dunno.

After the comments on the Rasdale auction I watched the Kelleher auction 743 with more than a casual interest. Previous comments on the opening bid equaling 1/2 of estimate are correct.

Roughly 25% of the items offered in sale 743 went unsold. Stark contrast to what I expected to see, after Rasdale.

Comments??

Par for the course for a Kelleher individual item sale which tends to have a somewhat high Pass rate. The Rasdale sale was a large lot sale with individual items as a caboose and as such catered to internet sellers and others starving for bulk material.

I like Kelleher for the most part but think that they are always, right or wrong, the second ran to Siegel & Co.. Kelleher will have some really amazing items that do not sell but if were offered by Siegel would. On the other hand Kelleher will offer items that are right up the middle for collectors seeking to fill that tough space without selling the condo in Aspen. Items that Siegel would pass on or offer in a group lot. Betwixt and between at times for Kelleher. They try very hard. I love their magazine. Great stuff. David truly loves the hobby.

Note: There are real bargains to frequently be had in a Kelleher "singles" sale. I know one non-internet well respected US dealer of note that scoops them up almost every time, gets fresh certs (graded if appropriate) and offers them to the market again within months and they sell quite readily thank you.

Bottom line for these two sales in comparison was type of material.

Simple. Their estimates and this their reserves tend to be too high. Regency suffered from the same affliction.

I won a couple items in both. They are definitely catering to different clientele. On SAN it looks like they are giving out trial use of their Provenance feature. I did notice at Kelleher that some of the items had previously been auctioned off at other houses recently and the opening bid was set at higher than it previously sold, and some of them were opening significantly higher than the previous sell price. I only buy for my collection, so I was happy to get what I really wanted without overpaying, but there was more that I wanted.

Been collecting for awhile. Buy mostly from ebay. Why would I want to buy from these auction houses? I look at their offerings. Great looking stuff. But is it worth my time to start trolling these houses?

Depends on what money you have to play with, and what you're after. When I returned to stamp collecting, I bought on ebay, then twigged that the lots I was buying were straight from auctions. Auctions give you access to better material, cheaper material, more comprehensive collections etc. I don't have lots of money to blow these days, so I just look at a couple of houses and bid on items at the lower end of the scale.

Definitely depends on what you are looking for. Most of open holes of the low $ easy items are gone in my collection. The ones on ebay that I can even find for sale are either buy it now or they start significantly higher that what I am willing to pay. If I do find one on ebay then you can imagine how many others are bidding on that same item. I have found better material at the auction houses for the remaining items I am looking for. Plus as someone already mentioned, much of the ebay items are coming from these auction sales.

On one hand that may be accurate, but how much luggage do end up with to get that one item if you have to buy an entire album or lot to get a few things you are after?

ebay allows (sometimes) you to buy just the one item you need/want, without having to get pages and pages of things you don't.

We all probably have wayyyyyyyyyy too much material in our stamp rooms because we "won" that lot to get a few items and are left with 100s of items we don't want.

Sometimes, it is better to get the one item at full retail than buy lots of extras you don't need/want/collect, but got a "bargain".

That said, I will bid crazy if I see a rare state revenue buried in a sea of shtuff and hope I can recover some of the lot cost back selling the reminder as a lot on ebay.

Luggage can become baggage!

Happily, yesterday I found an ebay lot of 6 closely related collectibles. Only one had any remote postal connection. I was glad the seller entertained my offer on the one postal-related item and kept the rest to resell as a smaller lot. I was the winner by avoiding having to resell the other 5 items myself.
