My copy of Gibbons, Commonwealth and British Empire (2004) mentions the use of fugitive inks for Travancore but doesn't indicate when or for which issues they were used. Were all stamps of Travancore always printed using fugitive inks? If so, I'd avoid soaking, but what about the use of a sweat box? I'm only looking to remove old hinges.
Soften the hinge (only) by using a fine paintbrush and water. Turn stamp over, lightly brush the hinge only. Do not soak, simply lightly brush. May take several applications and several minutes but the hinge will eventually let go; the idea is to let the moisture penetrate just the hinge. Patience helpful. Don
Thanks, Don. I've used that technique successfully on stamps with gum. Works great. For fugitive inks I was reluctant to try the sweat box, which also works well for gummed stamps. Unless I learn otherwise, I'll do all my Travancore issues with the brush-and-water-on-hinge-only method.
