I have developed an interest in the revenue stamps of Italy, and I would like to acquire a decent catalogue which covers this area. So far I have been using the ancient
Catalogue de Timbres-Fiscaux by Forbin (1915) along with
this website by Cristiano Bussoli. Some former Italian colonies are also covered by Andrew McClellan's
Revenue Reverend website. These sources provide an adequate picture of Italian revenues for me at the moment, but I would like something which goes into more detail, but not necessarily too specialized.
The main options I have in mind are the Barefoot
Italy Revenues (2013) or the Unificato
Marche da Bollo catalogue (2020). The former is in English and the latter is in Italian, and they seem to cover the same areas: pre-unification Italian states, Kingdom and Republic of Italy, colonies and occupations, along with San Marino and Vatican City. Their cost is also similar (£30 for Barefoot, €34 for Unificato, both excluding postage).
Are any SC members familiar with these catalogues, and if so what are your comments on them? I assume that Unificato is more detailed and reliable than Barefoot given that it is locally-published and more recent, but are there any advantages/disadvantages of one catalogue over the other? Do the catalogues cover contemporary issues such as the tobacco and alcohol excise banderoles or the Agenzia delle Entrate self-adhesive printed to order stamps?
Apart from Barefoot and Unificato, are there any other catalogues which are worth considering?
I don't think that any of the above catalogues include Italian municipal revenues, but fortunately there is an excellent freely-available online resource about these: the
Catalogue of Italian Municipal Stamps by Alex Kemura (2017).
