Strip "mining" is not the right word. Whoever created the original listing in the Unitrade catalogue way back when made a mistake.

While working on scans of the "Canada View Cards" (postal cards issued by Canada back in the early 1970s), I came across this card:

The view on the card (Webb's VC21) is very much similar to the same image as used on the stamp. Based on the caption on the card, this is:

"Strip farming in the Rocky Mountain Foothills"

The caption in the Unitrade catalogue has been corrected for the 2022 edition.

Yyyyessssss......I thought so and said so earlier. Strip FARMING makes way more sense.

Thank you, Robin, for the post and clearing up this minor mystery.

There are no "strip mines" in the Cowley, Alberta area

Some thing to think about....

A quarry and a strip mine are very different things, at least in southern Alberta.

If there were petroleum in the area in economically sufficient amounts, it would be drilled for, not strip mined.

I think Robin has nailed this issue correctly; and having lived in the area, I concur it is "strip farming" depicted on the stamp.

Robin Harris..Change the name to "Strip Farming".
I have been in contact with board member of the CHPF Nicole Plaskett from the Cowley district...Here is her replies.

Hi Robert

I have heard back from our Archivist and our board member Doug McLarty - who is George Hunter's nephew and also has also been researching George's stamp collection. Unfortunately due to Covid 19 we are locked out of the office and therefore cannot take a look for an actual negative or print of the image, but here are the two remarks:

Doug has let me know that it appears that the term "strip mining" to describe the stamp appeared in a 1988 stamp catalogue. Apparently a recent catalogue has changed the description to "strip farming". No mention of "strip mining" from Canada Post brochure when stamp issued apparently.

From our Archivist: I looked in the inventories and whenever George mentions Cowley Alberta he calls it "strip farming". It is difficult to say if he is referring to the same image since we haven't digitized anything from Alberta yet and I can't get into the archive to look at the photos at the moment. He mentions "strip farming" in relation to for over a dozen photographs of the Cowley area but never mining. I wish I could go and look at the images because he also references the stamp in one of his inscriptions but for now we at least have the metadata confirmation.

I hope this helps in some way. Thank you for reaching out to CHPF. We are digitizing George's images on a project to project basis. We have digitized over 4000 images of Ontario, Quebec and the East coast as well as 2000 images of BC. We hope to get to Manitoba as well as some of the Alberta images this year if funding comes through.

Yours Sincerely,
Nicole

Advice given by our Archivist and Board member. I will put it on my list of things to follow up on when we are back in the archive and see if I can provide you with an image of George's inscription on the photograph as an indication of the reference to "strip farming".
