I have been working on a personal small project with reguards to Post Offices in Canada that did not exist for a long period of time before being closed permanently, or changed to another district, etc.

The excel sheet will eventually include approx. 4000 P.O.'s that were open between one day to 20 years and under...I am putting a few of Canadian P.O.'s that were changed, closed, etc. And were not even in existence for a year.

Now just my opinion, there are a LOT of cancels on stamps/covers that went through the Canada Post canceling process in these offices.

How rare are some of these cancels from abandoned offices..???
Below is a small example of what I am talking about...

Robert

P.S....I have a Scott 359 "Hockey" stamp that has a cancel that if anaylized can make you think..Hmmm..Which I will post later.

Here is the story behind Fort Michener. (Taken from Northwest Territories Postal Cancellations 1907-1986, by Kevin O'Reilly.)

Located in Yellowknife. Named after His Excellency, Governor General Roland Michener.

Fort Michener was a special two day post office established in conjunction with the Annual Ball of the Legislative Assembly of the NWT in Yellowknife. In 1973 the ball was held in the Elk's Hall, Yellowknife. A hall was decorated as a fort to commemorate the centenary of the RCMP. The Governor General of Canada accepted an invitation to attend and the Legislative Assembly passed special legislation designating the hall as "Fort Michener".

This doesn't tell you if the cancel is rare or not, but there can't have been much or even any legitimate mail (as opposed to philatelic mail).

wert,

Will you make this available when complete?

I would love a list like this, especially if it can be sorted by the various columns (like the shortest amount of time open).

Correct Jan...Just wanted to bring to the attention of collectors that they MAYBE have a Canada Post normal cancel process though a P.O. that could be rare.

I probably will...Right now I only have about 550 entries, about 1/8 of it is finished...It will take time..It is itemized under 4 categorizes.

1-1 day but under year.
2-Over 1 year but under 5 years.
3-Over 5 years but under 10 years.
and
4-Over 11 years but under 20 years.

So far the excel sheet is 10-11 pages long.

Below is a Scott 359 Issued on January.23.1956 "Hockey"...My stamp was canceled on February.3.1956. This in itself is a nice early cancel, BUT, I started looking at in a different way...There are about 4000 people living in the town of St. Joseph de Beauce...Now in this French Town, it is known that French family's had lots of children.

Example, my French mother came from a family of 13
The contractor I used came from a family of 26 {yes 26}
Now lets just say at the low end an average family had 4 children back in the 50's.
Now estimating there were approx. 3000 people..Now a family of 6 divided into 3000 makes roughly 500 couples that could mail a letter...Now either the wife or the husband would do the creating of letters, which would bring down the amount to 250 {persons} creating letters.

Now lets say maybe each family would mail 2 to 3 letters a week on the high end...
This means possibly 500-750 letters mailed out in the first week...HOW many of these letters with the Scott 359 survived over time...??

Also the post office probably received a shipment of 359 stamps..BUT, maybe they {and remember we were not there} their rules were to possibly get rid of older stamps {Scott 358..Now could this stamp at this P.O. run out and first used say Jan.29 or Jan.31 or Feb.3rd..hmmm..

I would appreciate a Scott 359 off cover/on cover with a early date from the town of
St. Joseph de Beauce.
