Engraved Stamps - Take 2

Andrew, I've only seen the Portuguese Explorers in Scotts but would really like to see some good scans.
Portugal issued some great stamps in the forties like the 1946 Castle set, 1940 Mundo Portugues, 1941 regional costumes and the 1949 House of Aviz. I wanted to get them years ago but sorry to say I didn't because I was into too many other countries and I only had so much money to spend.
But I could kick myself now for buying all those Canadian matched Plate Blocks,sheets, multiple FDC, instead of the above.

Yes, Portugal made some wonderful stamps until the 1950s. After that, there were still a few nice ones until 1980 (the Cabral 1969 set shown above, Vasco de Gama in 1970 I think and 2 big sets about monuments and typical professions).

I liked those Portuguese Colony ones issued in the late fifties and early sixties, they were really colourful and well printed lithographed locally by Casa da Moeda I believe. They issued nicer stamps for the colonies than for the mother country.
Go figure.

Anthony, I have at least five of those Burgtheater MNH blocks floating around somewhere, if you want I'll mail you one and include some Czech & Austrian used as well.

The Nyassa Company and Mozambique Company stamps from the early 1900s are beautiful engraved stamps.
There's not that many but worth a look.

Casa da Moeda, in case you don't know, is basically Portugal's National Mint. It was responsible for issuing the national currency, special coins and for a long time, the stamps.

I see on this website http://www.stampprinters.info/SPI_Country_P.htm that recent printers are Litografia de Portugal S.A and Litografia Maia. I asume they are both private companies.

Litografia Maia and Nacional Portugal S.A. do print stamps but the 2 main ones, at least for 2010 have been:

- Casa da Moeda (INCM)
- CARTOR (from France)

These 2 are used for offset printing.

The special Ceres issue which was engraved, was printed by Enschede.

Hmmm, I have the Michel UN specialized catalogue handy, let's look through that one for now.

Thanks Ryan but that 5c is the multicolour photogravure version.

This is the engraved one which proves what an excellent engraver Yves Baril was.

I like the fact that it has all the technical details of each stamp: designer,engraver, printer, print runs etc, etc

The only drawback is the illustrations. The engraved ones look like they are photogravure.

Just to make sure I have the right meanings.

e gravurasa talhe doce = engraved

Heliogravados = photogravure

off-set pela = offset; but what does pela mean?

Desenho = designer

gravura = engraver

policromo (diferente gravura) = multicolour?? diferente ?

Concerning the meanings:

e gravuras a talhe doce = engraved (Correct, like French Taille-douce)

Heliogravados = photogravure (Correct)

off-set pela = offset; but what does pela mean? "offset by" - it must have the author or company that printed right after the "pela"

Desenho = designer (desenho = design; designer = desenhador)

gravura = engraver (engraving; engraver = have no idea actually lol. The fact that Portugal uses the term "Talhe-doce" it makes it difficult. Normally they use "designer / desenhador" also.)

policromo (diferente gravura) = multicolour?? diferente ? (do you have an example? Policromo is multicolour and "diferente gravura" is "different engraving")

I found this one in a recent old album purchase.
I think it may be missing a tab though.
