These Swedish Christmas stamps don't have the normal themes
associated with Christmas such as the Nativity scene or Santa or
Xmas decorations.
They show traditional preparations for the Christmas feast,
such as baking, preparing the cod fish, bringing in the tree,
candle making etc.

It seems to me that this thread is becoming a little stale - it needs stirring up a bit

Now here are some classic engravings by that unsung Kashmiri engraver Rahat Ju, from around 1865

(Jammu & Kashmir SG 12)

(Jammu & Kashmir SG 14, and)

(Jammu & Kashmir SG 8)

Not your pretty, pretty European scenes, but the work of a seal engraver who has been told to go away and engrave a stamp, without ever actually having seen one. No fine lines, because his engravings were to be used as handstamps, on primitive local paper, with natural pigments rather than products of the chemical works.

Perhaps not to everyone's taste, but ponder on them for a while, rather than recoiling in disgust. They have their own special beauty

Their beauty is certainly 'special'.
I do love that you are so enthusiastic about these primitive stamp equivalent of fossils but I am currently 'recoiling in disgust'
I think as I learn more about then and I thank you for the educational threads, I especially like the Turmeric one - yumyum, I will appreciate them more.

There really is only one response though -

I never seen a lion with a face like that. He looks scare to death. His eyes seem like human eyes. It's a nice stamp. I like swedish engraved stamps.

Please do not use the word 'nice' in relation to this stamp. It really does not do it justice
This is Slania's 1000th stamp.
The site below describes it as exquisite which is much more fitting.

Guys - I hope you take these comments in the lighthearted manner they were meant.
It is lovely though I agree.

Greenland 1945

I scan at the maximum resolution (600) but the engraving doesn't show as clear as with my magnififier.

A couple of days without Slania I think is too long.

Swedish warship Wasa sunk on her maiden voyage in 1628 due to
being built top-heavy and having insufficient ballast.
salvaged in 1961.
