Hi all! I have this Scott number 65. I am unsure what this fancy cancel is or where it is from. A friend of mine checked their Skinner and Cole and came up empty for me. Didn't see anything in Waterbury either. Does anyone know where I can find some info on this cancel? I appreciate any and all input. I thank you in advance.
I think it is a commercial steel cancel (meaning that there were a selection of cancellers commercially available to Postmasters for purchase), I think I recall seeing an advertisement for this one. Hopefully John or one of the other postal history folks will weigh in with a more definitive reply. Don
The "Target" cancel is very common on this issue but I've never seen one like that. There is a definite saw-tooth / gear outer ring. I flipped through Skinner & Eno as well but no joy. Interesting cancel.
The innermost circle has a distinct thin-lined circle as the smallest circle which reminds me of some of the patent punch-style defacing cancels - thinking it might be a cutting blade, but I did not see it among the patent cancels in the various reference books either.
