I doubt it is an overprint. Probably, it is part of a cancel.

Previously (a few years ago) there was a discussion of this overprint on SCF.

This series of stamps (Scott #557-77) are apparently notorious for private and fake overprints. Possibly this is just another one??

Observation:
The reason assistance is not at hand, is often the result of poor thread text strings.

If members took just a few seconds to construct a meaningful heading,
OR meaningful text in the body of the post, then modern IT power to search, cab be taken advantage of.

"German Mystery What is it" is absolutely neutral, a few weeks later, when this post dies, there is nothing that will bring us back to this thread, unless text arrives such as "German Ship Postmark or Overprint" or something similar.

I would encourage members to spend time to think of professional Philatelic thread titles that can benefit all of us.
Some titles appear as "click bait" this helps no one, and clogs up an otherwise fabulous knowledge base here at SCF.

This overprint looked familiar but it took some effort to find it. Sorry, no answer, no one seems to know anything about it. It's considered to be either a private overprint or advertising. But not official. Here are a couple of links:

And for future search efforts: Ship Overprint in Oval 1-Mark Michel 959

Nicely solved.
My searches were exhausted, next time I'll try with Michel number,
I had not thought of that.
So, at the moment "gimmick" is best opinion.
"The Golden Dove" I wonder if any relation to the vessel?

For the record from the above link.
