I'm starting to collect mint sheets; my single stamps are in hardbound books with clear strips and glassline pages...
Why would I spend $60 on a "brand" binder instead of buying Vario pages and putting them in a $10 Staples binder or even a $20 "fancy" binder, or heck, a $30 binder with slipcase?
(The collection of mint pages will be gifted to my daughter)

I don't really follow. If you're buying Vario, or any other size of Lighthouse stock-page, you're buying a "brand", and putting them in a binder, which may or may not be one of Lighthouse's. Or do you mean a purpose-made, printed album for the sheets?

From a pure collection storage perspective there is not much difference since the accomplish the same goal. Some collectors prefer something more elegant and that usually costs more money. If the recipient does not have a preference, then it does not really matter.

You could also consider the Hagner style pages that have some of characteristics of the bound book compared to the all plastic Vario pages. Of course, the loose leaf method can be expanded.

One potentially important thing to many collectors is a binder that comes with a dust jacket.

This usually does provide more and better protection for your material, but, of course, at a cost.

Why mint sheets? US? Recent purchased from post office? The reason I ask is that I use mint sheets going back to the 1940's for postage.

I think that it depends in part on the value of the contents. People tend to store expensive jewelry in a nice jewelry box rather than a zip lock bag. Same with stamps?

Thanks for the replies, cleared up some questions for me!
Re: GeoffHa - For me the issue was what value does one of the oft recommended binders provide? The sheets are archival and protect the stamps from time - what does the binder do? From a purely functional perspective?
Angie, txstamp and rogdcam answered my question - it's a matter of 1) you want something that looks good from a collector / display perspective and 2) dust jacket

Redwoodrandy; new mint sheets from the post office. They're beautiful, and I buy ones that I think my daughter can connect with. Plus, she gets free postage one day if she doesn't care for collecting them
