Hey there - still going through an old family collection and came across this nice stamp. I see no listings on ebay or in stampworld and just thought I'd get your thoughts on its rarity as it seems to bear a nice value in stampworld.

Thanks!

You can find more info here https://www.stampsmarter.org/1847us...html#Scott63

never trust where someone else has placed a stamp, wishful thinking always abounds. It is not a 'Special Printing'. Always start with the assumption that it is the most common variety.

Thanks - but that's only more confusing. According to the site you sent me to - the Franklin shows a '102' as a special printing and in the Scott page - per the pic - it's a 102. How about the Washington too? Have mercy - I'm brand new ye Gods of the Stamp Universe.

Your stamps were simply mounted in the wrong spaces. As mentioned probably someone with wishful thinking. The top stamp looks to be Scott 63 and the 2nd stamp (3¢ Washington) is a Scott 65. I'd almost bet my life they aren't the re-issues of 1875. The Scott 104 is more Brown than rose. The person that affixed them in those spaces might have been confused by the wording "Without Grill", both the Scott 63 & 65 were also "Without Grill"

Did you notice the issue date of Sc102 & Sc104? 1/1/1875. Used Sc63's & 65's were everywhere. 102 & 104 were ONLY available from the 3rd Assistant Postmaster General at his office or by sending by sending your request and payment by Registered mail, including return postage by Registered mail. If sent before 7/1/1875, the request cost 3c postage, 7c Reg plus 1c + 3c AND 10c to sent them to you, after 7/1/1875 Registration was 10 cents.

How very true, I get that with my Turkey pages purchased.
Very common.

Other times I find stamps in wrong positions, hinged with modern tabs,
others on the page are old Dennison.
Sellers could be "flushing" out a page to look more appealing.

The world is full of trickery.

Thanks you guys are an amazing help. How would I actually go about fully authenticating these and getting any in the correct spaces if they are indeed misplaced? These haven't been touched in 30-40 years and my Grandfather was a very astute stamp collector with massive world collection. So I'm not sure about any of these - although I would be rather surprised if he misplaced any.

For instance - how would I go about identifying this Rose Washington? Of course it's 'wishful thinking' that it's the valuable 10X12 - but how would I know for sure other than perf gauging?

Also the Franklin is imperforated on the right side. Is this an error or what do I make of it? I also found this 1912-914 Washington with only 1 perforated side. What do I do ? :) (Should perforation questions be in another post?)
