UPDATE: My bad! This is for Iceland, not Hungary. Not sure how I got that wrong the first time.

If you look at Hungary (correction) Iceland C3 and CO1 - the overprinted version (both triangles with a gyrfalcon) - on ebay, you see a wide range of values.

I'm wondering if the lower priced copies might be fakes/forgeries, but I have no idea how to tell if they are or not.

Any clues? Or if they're all genuine, why the wide price range?

Thanks.

As far as I am aware, the issue hasn't been faked. Most "used" stamps have been cancelled to order (ie they never went on an airmail cover). However, it's very much a buyer's market on ebay so get the best price you can.

If you collect used, make sure the stamp has a nice clear cancel, preferably not showing the fancy žingvellir or Reykjavik cancels with the squirly marks in the double-circle (these are cancelled to order or are philatelically used); a good bridge-type cancel is worth looking for as these are likely to have been properly used. Look for good centering as pre-1945 Iceland stamps are notoriously badly centered.
