US Collection Returning To The Hobby

Hi all

Been lurking on this site since last April figured I would post. I started collecting when I was about 11, my father collected and he gave me my grandfather's album. I transferred much of that to a minkus all American album. Mostly used stamps but a few mint ones and few pre-1900 which thrilled me. My dad and I used to go to stamp stores and pick out from the bargain bins stuff we needed. I did this for several years. Then stopped late HS but kept the album.

Fast forward about 25 years and last April during lockdown I opened up my album. I thumbed through it and saw I was missing Scott 2419, the $2.49 astronaut stamp. I always wanted that one and checked ebay, bought it for basically for face value. Now, I'm hooked again only Now I have some $ to put into it. Most recently I picked up stamp 1a with a Philadelphia cancel and 1 with a date post when it was no longer in use from the bill gross collection. I'm currently waiting on a c3 top plate from siegels auction last week. Will post it when it arrives.

Love hearing everyone's stories and challenges trying to discover and learn about stamps.

Hi and welcome to the machine...er forum!! It's a great hobby that always provides new things to learn with every new stamp you acquire. By the way... Which one is Pink??? Fantastic username!!

Collecting for the enjoyment of collecting, whatever that might be, is the name of the game. Don't hesitate to ask questions especially if you need basic information and especially more advanced sources of information for any possible topic. You should be able to find folks on this board a little further along on their collecting journey glad to share experiences.

Thx. Not many get the floyd reference, first song I played on my guitar.

When I was taking computer programming (BASIC!) in high school back in the early '80s, my final project was a text-based game called "Brain Damage: The Floydian Church Adventure Game," set in a future where Pink Floyd lyrics were Holy Writ. There was a bit of random number generation involved in determining the outcome, but if you didn't know your Floydian Scripture, you had absolutely no chance of reaching the goal.

Thanks. @hoosierboy, did u go to IU? I went to Purdue but live in Chicago now. I see you collect Indiana postal history. Would love to see some highlights sometime. I've been thinking about getting into Lafayette Indiana covers but not that many online.

Here are some more stamps I've collected this year. The last one is reperforated but was on the certificate.

Very nice stamps. I can't tell the shade of the 24cent 1861 and is that a Scott30 at the end? If so that would be an expensive stamp used.

Funny, your story sounds about the same as mine. Me and my dad collected, and when I went away to college I kept my collection at home, where it gathered dust. About 8 years ago my Dad passed away and I inherited boxloads of stamps. I have been slowly sorting through them as time allowed. But since March of last year, I have dived in. I collect used US, and have been having fun finding the issues that came out after our last album in the mid 80s. Bought a 15 pound kiloware collection on ebay and had a BLAST! Still sorting!

Scott 70 red lilac, with a target cancel. It's really tough to get the camera to pick up that shade. I'll need to find better lighting.

The Jefferson is 30a brown type II but is reperforated on the left. With the cancel I thought it made up for it.
