New Member But Long Time Collector Returns To Hobby

My dad and my cousin started me on collecting WW stamps back in the 1960's. I began specializing in the Germany and related areas (Love those Kaiser Yachts). I took a hiatus of over 25 years after getting married and raising four kids. My dad has passed on, but my 96 year old cousin, who was in the fray at Utah Beach on D-Day, is still going strong and collecting. I am getting back into the hobby partially to reconnect with my cousin and because I have missed the joy of collecting.

Updating my Scott's Germany Specialty 2 Post Albums is proving to be a challenge. I have found and ordered some supplements on ebay and the Internet. Many of the missing years I have not been able to find. I know I could blank page the these years, but that does not look good. Is it possible to either modify say a Lighthouse or other supplement or even have them printed? Any suggestions? Thank you.

There are many new ways to customize pages. Are you using Lighthouse albums?

I love the Kaiser ships too. Interesting that some of them are worth more used than mint. I wouldn't mind having some of them on cover.

I collect worldwide to 1940 and use two Scott International Volume I to mount them.

You will find any knowledge about stamps you care to garner on this site!

Option 1 search for a used album like the one that you have and then take the pages that you need. Often much cheaper than buying individual supplements.
Option 2 would be to buy a new up to date album.

Hey BobbyT, I think somewhere I have your name sake's autograph along with Ralph Branca's on a HSC baseball. I do not use a Lighthouse album for my main German collection. I use 2 post Scott Germany and Colonies albums. I have never seen a Kaiser Yacht on a cover. That would be awesome.

Hi Kusau, That is a good suggestion about buying a used album to update. Thus far most of the Scott Germany Albums that I have seen on ebay are pretty much out of date also. I received sticker shock when I found one brand new album. I was surprised to find only one listing and that one was only current to 2015. Outside of ebay is there someplace else you would recommend me to look. Thank you.

Sounds like you have a strong baseball connection. Do you remember the old "big red machine" Frank Robinson, Veda Pinia (sp?), Joe Knucjsol (sp), and others?. Long before Johnny Bench.

Collecting for the enjoyment of collecting, whatever that might be, is the name of the game. Don't hesitate to ask questions especially if you need basic information and especially more advanced sources of information for any possible topic. You should be able to find folks on this board a little further along on their collecting journey glad to share experiences. Russ

Close Russ! Vada Pinson and Joe Nuxhall, the latter having the distinction of being the youngest player (age15) to ever pitch in MLB.

And let's not forget Jim Maloney, Leo Cardenas, Tommy Harper, and even Pete Rose who goes so far back he covers the early-mid 1960s teams as well as the 1970s teams.

Funcitypapa- something possibly not known about Joe Nuxhall is that he "retired" in 1946 at the age of 17!!! He then unretired and reappeared in MLB at age 23.

Babe Ruth -I also have that baseball, signed by Bobby Thomson and Ralph Branca, and a baseball card that depicts the shot heard round the world.

Though born in 1949, my first memory of baseball is that homer by my namesake, though that memory comes from 1955 when I was living in Brooklyn, New York. The neighbor kids told me I could not root for the Dodgers because my name was Bobby Thomson. My father had to explain it to my tears self.

I always thought the "Big Red Machine" was Bench, Perez, Morgan, Rose, Concepcion of the 1970s, so I learned something new here.

My first set of Baseball cards that I collected were 1959 Topps. Pafko at the wall predates me by a few years, but what a great moment in baseball. Thankfully, the audio call was preserved.

I remember Frank Robinson with the Reds and when he was called an old 31 by the Reds front office to help justify the trade for Milt Pappas. I was at the game in Cleveland when Frank became the first black manager in MLB and hit that homerun off Doc Medich. The stadium went wild. Vada Pinson shared a year of his career with the Indians, but what I remember most of him was when he with the Royals hit a fly ball that struck the tight rope put up for a Karl Wallenda performance. Vada was rewarded with a single instead of an out. The Big Reds Machine was outstanding. Pete Rose would run to first on a walk. What a lineup of Hall of Fame hitters. I think Pete should be there.

The Babe is obviously my favorite. It is not because we both share the first name of George. The Babe not only revolutionized the game with his long balls, but was actually the best left handed pitcher in the American League before switching full time more or less to the outfield. A Babe trivia question is what is the only American League Stadium that the Babe played in, but did not hit a homerun? The answer is Cleveland Municipal Stadium. The Babe quipped that it was so large that he would need a horse to cover the outfield. I could go on and on, but I will cut it short here.

If it is ok, then I will call on you guys when stamp (or Baseball) questions come up. Feel free to share more baseball memories. I have a ton of them.

When I signed up for this forum, I expected to "learn a little" about stamp collecting. I have already learned a lot.

But I did not expect to learn about books I should be reading or baseball, yet I have learned about both of those things. I must now read "Pafko at the Wall" and a whole reading list of books and stories involving stamp collecting.
