Does anyone know of a resource where I can dig up the number extant of the Waterbury Pumpkin Fancy Cancels off cover? I've looked at the Siegel site and if the info is in there somewhere, I was unable to extract it.

There is the Rohloff book on the Waterbury cancels: http://lcps-stamps.org/wp-content/u...865-1890.pdfThe pumpkin is rated as RR, less than 15 copies known, and that (EDIT: only) includes covers. The book was published in 1979 so I would hazard a guess that very few if any additional ones have turned up since.EDIT: see wtcrowe's posts below |

I can't tell you how many off cover examples exist as I never tried to track them, but as Waterbury cancellations go it is relatively common. When I was keeping track of on cover examples, I found 32 different covers with that cancel. Off cover quantity is most likely greater. |

The numbers in the Rohloff book are their estimates as to the number of examples that exist on cover only. They did not try to estimate the number off cover. Many of the numbers are guesses. Some are very low and some are high. After the publication of the book there was a large find - the Chase correspondence that added at least three "running chicken" covers. |

wtcrowe for the win! I feel then that tracking off cover stamps would be difficult and frustrating. There are too many cancels out there misidentified as Waterburys and probably too many unidentified/unconfirmable as such.
I didn't know the Chase correspondence was found so late. Thanks for that bit of info. |

The Chase correspondence was in the Mattatuck, CT Historical Society. My auction of the correspondence was in 1985, catalog is here: https://www.rfrajola.com/catalogs/RCF23.pdfPage 74 of PDF file is the start of the auction lots, the illustrated summary by cancel type starts on page 88 of the file. |

I remember vividly when that auction catalog arrived at my house in the mail in 1985. At the time, Ishikawa's famous Running Chicken cover, was one of the pinnacles of cancel collecting. And now there were 3 more ?! It was quite an inflection point. |

Richard - my goodness. What a picture. You've certainly handled some fabulous material. I would be happy with any 'one' of those |
