Saint Appolonia..The patron saint of toothache. Saint Apollonia was one of a group of virgin martyrs who suffered in Alexandria during a local uprising against the Christians prior to the persecution of Decius. According to legend, her torture included having all of her teeth violently pulled out or shattered. For this reason, she is popularly regarded as the patroness of dentistry and those suffering from toothache or other dental problems. French court painter Jehan Fouquet painted the scene of St. Apollonia's torture in The Martyrdom of St. Apollonia....wiki |

St John at Latin gate: Another feast day, which appeared in the General Roman Calendar until 1960, is that of "St John Before the Latin Gate" on May 6, celebrating a tradition recounted by Jerome that St John was brought to Rome during the reign of the Emperor Domitian, and was thrown in a vat of boiling oil, from which he was miraculously preserved unharmed. |

According to the ATA, religion and/or religion based themes are one among the most popular out there. There is certainly a lot of material to choose from. |

Interesting LaSwab, I would have thought well down the list, On the Newsgroups I frequented over the past 7 years only once did I read a post regarding collecting religion as a thematic. There must be vast amounts of material there. I would imagine birds, butterflies and trains to top the list.

One of my favorite religious stamps: the Macarena in San Gil Church, Seville. Fell in love with her face the first time I saw it. |

Yes a lovely stamp Tony, the virgin of hope. You were once chasing this stamp with perf 15? Did you ever corroborate that claim?

Well, a local chappie told me (about a year ago, I think, your memory is better than mine, mate) that he had seen a Macarena perforated 15. I have a new and a used and both are exactly 13x12.5. So I asked the question in another forum and was told that no one, more or less, had ever seen one. However, around the same time, I was contacted privately by a collector in Madrid who told me that he too had heard of a 15 but had not actually seen it. That's the last I ever heard of that particular inquiry. One of these days I shall inquire about it on Filaposta and see if there is any new information floating around.
