April 10 I placed my POB payment in the provided postage paid USPS envelope at my home mail box with a check. The box rent was due May 1. May 6 I go to the PO to check my box and it was locked due to non payment. I went to the counter and paid again getting my mail. As of May 21 the check has not cleared my bank.
That happened to me once many years ago. Their return envelopes are so flimsy, and the foldover envelope flap isn't gummed very well and sections of the flap can stick up and/or come loose. I ASSUME the return envelope got mangled in their crappy machinery.
After that, I now always hand the envelope to a clerk. They see what it is and set it aside for 'personal' delivery to whomever handles PO box payments. Of course, you have to do that at the PO with your PO box.
Your initial payment is currently lost, but it may not be lost forever! You may want to consider placing a stop payment on the original check, because if it does turn up and get cashed by the P.O., then you may have difficulty getting the money back.....
Or it might get applied to the next six month or twelve month box rent, which might save a few dollars given the way that the box rents seem to be rising each time I make a payment.

That's what I've always done. I'm going to the post office to check my PO box anyway, and my renewal notice is delivered there, so I might as well just pay at the counter and get it done.
You say the check got "lost" in the mails. But you don't know that. Couldn't it have been stolen from your mailbox? A lot of people have mail stolen from ordinary mailboxes. The thieves are looking for credit cards, credit card numbers, and checks they can wash and rewrite. That might be what happened to your check. I'd call my bank and cancel that check if I were you. Either pay by check in person at the post office or use a credit card to pay -- and with any payment by check or credit card number, it's always safest to not leave the outgoing mail in your home mailbox but to take to the post office. Or hand it to the mailman, if you can.
