Here is a minor plate variety noted, but not listed in the UPSS catalog.

Called either "unruly hair" or "partially missing queue"

"many minor plate varieties of this card have been reported, such as a break above the "J" of "JEFFERSON", an unruly hair in Jefferson's queue and inscription frame damage"

I was not aware of this one, until I read the article. In going back through my stack of extras, I found two.

As knowledge expands, it is fun to see the fly-specks we can find. Congratulations.

Fantastic variety, but that does not look like a flyspeck to me. A flyspeck is usually much less obvious, one needs a loupe to see it

A few items:

1. title should be UX27 (S37)

2. I looked through about 500 UX27 cards and found one copy of the unruly hair variety postmarked 1949, quite close to the 1950 example above:

3. Also two copies of the "break above J of Jefferson", which extends upward through the E of One, and also irregularity to the top of the C in Cents. Postmark dates of 1940 and 1945, for those wanting to target their search.

John - you are correct. Thanks. ( That topic title was a mess)

I'm not sure from the article (Mar-Apr 1981) if they have pined down exactly when it started.I've looked for other references, but have not found any.

Thanks for the "J" example; had not seen one. Now I have to go back through the stack.
Pat

From a UPSS 2003 article.
"...believes that the unruly hair is the remains of the outer edge of
the queue and the void between the unruly hair and the mass of
the queue is a missing section of the plate. They have been found
mint, unused and used. The earliest used in 1940 and the latest is
1954 on a surcharged S56 card. Thirteen years this damaged
plate was in use -maybe longer! Happy hunting!)

Found this in a small lot of Postal Cards I recently bought.
Also found a mint face one in an antique store Post Card box For $1.50

Will have to ask UPSS if they've found an EKU for this.

8 May 1940

Sent in a query to Lewis Bussey, Editor, UPSS 2020 U.S. Postal Card Catalog. Received a nice reply, and question was posted in the Postal Stationery #450 May-June 2023 Shoebox &
Stationary Forum. Looking to see if he had any further information.

Nothing new to report, but at least it's out there to see if anyone has any other information.

Starting to think this variety may not be as uncommon as I thought.

These two found in a low bid ebay auction lot I just got (did not know they were there before received).

Thanks,
pat

Finally found someone who put a value on the variety.
From his latest auction on ebay.

If you like postal stationary and cards his site is worth a look. I've purchased from him in the past, and he sells quality items.
Thanks,
pat

Talked to Mr. Levine by phone after the listing failed to sell. He let me buy the revalued (UX39) by itself.
Also took the time to pick a few full corners to fill in a few holes in the collection.
